The NCAA could mandate a round robin between conferences in football, where each power conference plays the other power conferences during the season.
Each team would play their counterpart in the other conferences. i.e. 1's play 1's, 2's play 2's. Only stipulation is you don't play your rival.
That would be 4 games a year. Then have the rest of the games as normal in your conference.
Sure would eliminate quick who was actually better than who.

one could cheer for the SEC or ACC with a straight face because competition has nothing to do with the conferences but just the teams playing. It would solve all kinds of comparison issues. Fans could once again only cheer for the teams they support. Period. The end.

So, why would this eliminate cheering for other teams in your conference. This schedule change would cost the power conferences a lot of money and eliminate a revenue source for small schools, but I don't think it would do anything for conference loyalties.
I cheer for other ACC teams because I want to increase the prestige of the conference. That's good for Clemson because it yields better TV contracts, better bowl tie ins, and higher rankings for all conference teams. Adding in 4 difficult out of conference games wouldn't make me pull for them any less. In fact, it would give me more opportunities to pull for VPI, UNC, FSU, etc.

teams, and all the others. This conference cheer stuff is lame and only got going under the SEC. Now all Coots do is pull for their conference this and conference that. What about when teams STOOD on there on. In the 1980's it was ALL CLEMSON!
I am not sure pulling for the conference really helps your team out at all. If you are not baby blue or royal blue you are already disadvantaged and get the leftovers in many cases (or the BAD calls).

they obviously really don't care about who is really the best team.
If they did, they'd already have a playoff system
Like EVERY OTHER sport,
AND EVERY other division of THIS sport.

the teams from the 4 or 5 super-conferences and made it one big league. Then just divide by region and have a playoff at the end similar to the NFL.
