Would You Listen to a "AI Jim Phillips" Clemson Broadcast?

4

Aug 20, 2023, 7:37 AM

I was watching some old Clemson highlights the other day from the 70's and 80's where the legendary Jim Phillips was calling the games as only he could.

It dawned on me with all of this new AI technology that the ability to duplicate Jim's voice and probably mannerisms in an AI could occur.

Would you want to listen to such a broadcast if it were possible?

I couple of my buddies were tossing this around and I'm inclined to so no.

Thoughts?

Yes, I would!

I was listening on the radio, absolutely would like to hear it. I would think that AI could do that….

I don’t know exactly why, but the prospect of AI doing something like this creeps me out.

It’s not that the idea of recreating an accurate facsimile of something we have lost isn’t fascinating.

It’s just that the further we go down this path the less and less the actual real experience will matter.

In the long run hearing/seeing the real Jim Phillips (or anyone else) will cease to be important. We won’t even be able to tell if it’s real or not.

I’m not sure where all this is headed and at 74, I’m probably not going to be impacted by it to any great degree.

I'm on the fence

I don't think I would like to hear a live broadcast but it would be a fun experiment to go back to some of the biggest games in the last decade and have a Jim Phillips call those great games.

I agree, no AI Jim Phillips.

And I have no idea where this is going either.

It's like any other giant leap in technology. I am thinking it will help a great deal doing the "busy work" of my dissertation that I start in a week.

This will give me more time to focus on the research/results part of the study. I was thinking to myself, isn't this what we want?

Anyway, research will speed and so will medical breakthroughs. At 74, you're 3 years younger than my father. You might be impacted just yet with a longer, healthier life. At least I hope so. For you of course, but also to have more time with my best friend.

Giant leaps in medical research would certainly make it …

… much more appealing.

Cancer, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ALS, etc., etc., etc. … just so many areas where progress has been so very slow.

I guess cynical me fears that the popular focus will be on giant leaps in frivolous, but profitable things like virtual reality and recreating voices and faces of dead celebrities.

Speaking of play by play, the guy from Uof Washington who used to be at Clemson was on WCCP the other day. That guy has a great set of pipes on him and seemed fairly intelligent. Swing and a miss by Clemson on that one

That guy was really good. Very good radio voice and professional. I’d take about anyone other than Munson. I usually don’t listen to the radio broadcast unless I have to run out for an errand or something during an away game. Munson is HORRIBLE

I think listening to a robot imitate the voice of a dead man would be pathetic.

How would Jim's family feel?

How would Jim feel? I think he might say that Munson is our man who is alive and the voice of Clemson in this age and time. Thanks for remembering me and for your support and respect that you gave me when I was with you. Go Tigers

I think a full game would be too much, but I'd like to see someone fiddle with the final drive in the 2016 CFPCG and put his voice in it via AI.

Not many seem to like Munson, but I don't mind him that much. Still better than most TV guys. I really liked Pete Yanity in the position, although I might be in the minority.

No. Not a fan of AI except in the medical research field. In fact, we need to stop messing around with this stuff.

No. Can you imagine AI JP trying to wrap his head around a 3 minute delay for a replay review of catch-no catch? Or of a targeting call with ejection review? Or trying to describe running down the hill for 3-4 minutes? Let the man rest.

Aug 20, 2023, 6:20 PM

…but arrived at the conclusion that there’s a human element that just couldn’t be replaced. Would an AI recognize the uniqueness of a touchdown with the jumbo package? Some of the most memorable moments come from those moments of pure human excitement.

As others have suggested it might be interesting (think experiment) to try and post process a version of a game to see how Jim-like it could be. Admittedly part of me just wants to hear his voice again.
