Run the ball!

Sep 6, 2023, 10:38 AM

Reviewing the post game comments from the SCAR, OB, and Duke losses, I keep seeing the same thing. Essentially the coaches saying "in hindsight, we should have run the ball more." Dabo seems to know that our strength is in the run game, calling the new offense "The Dirt Raid" instead of the "Air Raid." So... when are we going to actually start being a run first offense? The O line looks good and the RBs look great. We are averaging more than 5 yards a carry - which is awesome considering we have zero down field passing game and the safeties can sneak up.

Further, the most demoralizing thing that can happen to a defense is when they know the run is coming and they can do nothing to stop it. Combine that with Shipley's ability to get better as the game goes on (you can see it when he activates "crazy-eye" mode) and we should be pounding the ball with PA mixed in to keep defenses as honest as possible.

Tunnel screens and swing passes have their place, but should not be the bread and butter of the passing game. Getting the defense going sideline to sideline, then going deep might work when you have a Hopkins, Watkins, Williams, Higgins, Ross, etc. that can beat people deep - but we don't have that WR right now.

Pound the rock. 5 yards and a cloud of dust will work - especially with the new clock rules. We have the personnel to do it, too.

5 yds and a cloud of dust as your game plan, went the way with the buggy whip. Worked 50 yrs ago, but not today.

Would work even better today because of the new clock rules

Still need a downfield passing game, and we don't seem to have that. I guarantee it will lead to more success than tunnel screen, swing pass, RPO, punt!

Our O-line can run block any D-line in the country and I belive Dukes D-line is a top ten d line. Maybe top 7 when you factor in the depth they have. But with that said. We were a seal block on the edge or a pulling guard missing a block away from popping some huge runs Monday. I counted 13 times we could have popped 30+ yarders. If you smack a team in the mouth with the run game we have long enough. Your down field passing will open up. I don't care if you have D2 speed out wide. It will be open

We did, we fumbled, and we lost

FSU is going to come here in 2.5 weeks and they are going to commit to stopping us from running the ball (and they have the DL to do it)

We are going to need to be able to throw the ball over the top and make them pay.

So we better start practicing that now - cover 2 be ####ed
