Why were Tiger fans so excited when Coastal Carolina won the NCAA baseball national championship

Opposed to USC? I know, I know, USC is our rival, but what justified Coastal, as them being "ok" to pull for in the College World Series in 2016? I'll admit, that I was pulling for them to win it all too. Are they our sister baseball team or something?

Well I grew up here in Clemson, but I graduated from Coastal Carolina. So I've been having a pretty good run has of late. Go Tigers and Go Chants! Here's hoping they never meet in the postseason.

I was glad they won it but at the same time was thinking how pitiful it was that we don't have one.
Jack could screw up a wet dream we had 2 teams under him that were far and away the best team in the nation.
plus 2 years we were 1 win away from the championship round and let the Coots send us home.

baseball and there's rarely a team that's "far and away" the best in the sport. Winning 3/4 of your games in baseball is outstanding (that's barely be above average in CFB) and it's nothing to drop a series to a lesser opponent. Anything can happen on a given day in baseball and playing double elimination or 3-game series isn't nearly enough games for the best team to consistently win. The entire postseason in college baseball is a crap shoot and being the best team doesn't assure you of anything.

I guess it was because we were pulling for the David vs Goliath theory, and they just so happened to be a team from our beloved state that wasn't the coots. Good point there. Didn't really think about it, sorry I asked. Is it ok to be glad that they won though?

We dont compete on the same stage, that's not to say that there arent as good, or compete for the same recruits. Our roster is full of high school all americans from all over the country. They won with a bunch of players that werent recruited by us or scar. It would also be cool if Charleston or Furman won it.

It seems the majority of their students from SC are Clemson fans. They were either unable to get into Clemson or wanted to save $ from lower tuition and be closer to home.
Plus it marginalizes usc's baseball championships when a team from The BIG SOUTH Conference can win it.
I mean these teams have won the baseball title in the last 25 years.

There's nothing wrong with pulling for a David and Goliath type scenario, as referred to by a fellow tigernet yet..just couldn't put my finger on why everyone seemed to pull for them at the time...Heard ccu didn't even have a fieldhouse for their baseball team like 15 years ago, so it was an interesting story. I really think Clemson has a great shot at Omaha this year.

For me the beach was the thing I loved. I was a beach lifeguard for 5 summers on the South end of Myrtle Beach and I loved it. Coastal has its advantages and it's business school is pretty good. At 18 girls and the beach were the most important things to me...lol

I have 4 good friends that were life guards in the 70s. Oh the stories they tell!!!!
All have done extremely well in life. One is on here. One is a vet, one's a PHD that ran a federal lab, one is a highly successful contractor. The fourth married an old successful real estate developer's daughter. Well they all have done well!

Well for me I went to Coastal 1st and we never considered ourselves related, affiliated with the coots. We voted to change the mascot and most of the students were Clemson fans while I was there. My best friend and I both transferred to Clemson along with several of our friends. I grew up a Clemson fan. I never got along with the baseball team when I was there because I stole the team captains girlfriend. The baseball and soccer teams both were pretty good while I was there in the 80's.
I pulled for them because we were out but I'm a Clemson fan 1st and I have always been one since the day I was born. We had no choice and we never wanted another choice about being a Tiger.
I pulled for Clemson while I was at Coastal and so did our circle of friends and we went home to go to all the Clemson games in the fall, my parents were in Anderson so it was understood.
Unless Coastal's students have changed they are still mostly Clemson fans. Nobody at Coastal wants to be a coot and they are no longer affiliated with the coots. Most of the students have a love for the beach as I did.
Go Tigers and Go Coastal if you have a shot to beat the coots.!!!!

Thank you. Just the answer I needed. Glad you explained that to me cause I never went to CCU, I did go to CLEMSON though. Just glad to finally get an explanation.
