Why does Notre Dame have such perceived leverage ??

Let's say they hold out and stay independent ...
What's to say these new Mega Conferences wouldn't "Blackball" them and refuse to schedule them ?
They can't win Natty's playing Fresno State and Toledo.

ND has leverage until they do not. The school is a national brand with no way to survive long term without a mega conference. A lot of the domer faithful are in denial thinking they can stay independent. The ACC messed up royally in 2020 by bailing out ND’s football season.Just think what the ACC could have do now with expansion with ND as an official member.

The ACC messed up when we offered them 5 games per season.

Both the SEC and ACC were scheduled to go to a 9 game conference schedule. ND was about to be forced into joining a conference to ensure they could fill their schedule...and them Swofford happened.

I guess you have never looked up the history of any teams and have never heard of the Catholic church. Notre Dame is and always will be a top draw for the networks but with changes, they may have less leverage.

Though there is a long way to go until signing date, their leverage is also increasing with the projected #1 or 2 recruiting classes for 2023 & 2024. Which bodes well for how good they will be in the future. ND loves their new FB coach.

It's mostly history. Historically ND has a bunch of championships and Heisman winners. Of course their last championship was in 1988 and their last Heisman winner was Tim Brown in 1987. As an independent they also played a national schedule, and back in the 80s were the one team that was consistently shown on TV every saturday, nationwide. So while they, like Clemson, are a smaller school with a smaller alumni base, they got a LOT of national exposure. They were also a school that the Catholics could easily get behind. So they collected a lot of "subway alumni", rabid ND fans who don't actually have any connection to the school. Places like Clemson and Alabama also have those unaffiliated fans, but they have historically been more regional, so a smaller group. It has only been recently that folks outside the southeast know what/where Clemson is! I can remember telling someone in the NE I was going to Clemson, and the said right! Clemson Tide. Folks across the country have been aware of ND as a force in college football for a looooong time. They are still an incredibly valuable brand, and that value translates into leverage.

History and Lots Of Football Watching Catholics

They have pretty much a "divine" form of leverage. Many Catholic football fans who love ND. They also spend money. Side Note to all the people who have exclaimed "amateur/college football" purely about the passion - wink wink! It's not; not on this level.
But, money and TV power is why. Throw in their rich history and BANG!
I agree though; just don't schedule them. Just have them playing Coastal and Akron and BYU and so on. What governing body would step in and "force teams to schedule them"?
Funny their recruiting picked up after B. Kelly! Money.
Is CFB headed toward a salary cap? In terms of money a football program can generate(of course not). It's never been a fair appropriation(if you will). I don't think they have as much leverage as they once did. But, perhaps they must learn the hard way about this slippage of leverage(to your point).

History and big national brand.
I never understand the hate for Notre Dame. They tried to join the B1G many decades ago and they were refused. Ever since, they have scheduled nationally and embraced their independent status. There used to be a lot of independents in CFB, but Notre Dame has endured and thrived because of their national status.
Don't schedule them? Don't schedule a team that gets huge ratings? Why would teams not schedule them? Makes no sense.
The ACC helped Notre Dame in 2020? It worked both ways, which is why the conference made record money that year as we split ACC football money and Notre Dame football money and had two teams in the playoff.
I do think they WILL end up joining B1G at some point. Though Notre Dame already leaves money on the table by having the contract with NBC, the opportunity to join a conference that not only has some of their traditional (if now dormant) rivals like Michigan and Michigan State wouldn't hurt them. Bit with the B1G adding one of their annual rivals in USC (and potentially Stanford, down the road), they'd potentially have everyone they like to play every year, sans Navy, in one conference.
BTW, when I was young, I attended the 1977 Clemson-Notre Dame game (Joe Montana led ND to a 21-17 win (and to the National Championship) after trailing 17-7 in the Valley. That game was HUGE. Because it was Notre Dame.
