For everyone who was against Pitt/Syracuse and cried

over and over about WVU not being invited to join the ACC, do you still feel that way after the 2012 season?
Syracuse killed WVU last year and this year...I mean totally dominated them both years. They also dominated Louisville and beat SEC foe Mizzou on the road.
Pitt should have beaten ND, and got hit with a very bad call in OT to lose. They crushed VT and Rutgers.
WVU got embarrassed in Big 12.
I've said all along Pitt and Syracuse are a much better fit and have as much football potential as WVU long term.

Reasons to respect Syracuse football:
1) They've kicked a lot of "name brand" teams' butts, including ours.
2) They serve beer in the Carrier Dome.
3) They're orange.

Yeah. So does Louisville. Both schools make some pretty good money, and unpleasant incidents involving alcohol like we have here in Puritanland are few and far between (the drunk hillhag who puked all over the bathroom door at my daughter's first game would probably be tazed and banned).
Miami also serves. Word has it that they sold four cups last year, so each of their fans must've had two apiece. The U was able to buy a Happy Meal with the profits.

The question isn't the football product alone . Its athletic program as a whole especially the fan base and tv revenue. When its all accounted for WV still would have been better even as a 500 football team.

have helped the ACC more than those two.
What does the ACC lack that hurts Clemson? Rabid fans. That's what drives the bowl lineup. The ACC bowls are not great. Having another traveling fanbase in the ACC would not only help fill DV, it would also help the ACC get better bowl contracts. That's one reason the ND affiliation is a positive for the ACC.
Now with that said, I hate WVU.

WVU would have been a terrible selection. I am glad they were not selected to join and they went elsewhere. Their fan base are worse than the Coots...just terrible. Give them two more years and their program will slide worse than Notre Dame against Bama. PITT and the Cuse are getting stronger, just wait and now with Louisville...there will be some exciting things ahead.

As a matter of fact, I'm happy to have them as members. But WV, to me, is a great fit. Good football with rabid fans, decent basketball, owns the state and has rivalries or could have rivalries with Pitt, VT, Maryland (and now Louisville) and really any of the old Big East teams. They make sense geographically. I just think that "academics" was a poor criteria. And I am one who considers academics in a conference relevant. But people act like WVU students drool on themselves. It's a bit overdone.
In addition, I like WVU as a football tradition and it frustrates me that they are attached to the Big 12, which is such a bad fit for them. I also don't like that it gave the Big 12 a eastern foothold from which to cause drama with other ACC schools.
Finally, having said all that, I was happy that both Syracuse and Pitt had some nice games this past season, and of course Louisville's BCS performance was lights-out. The future might just be bright after all for the ACC.

Some of it yes, some of it no.

Let's see...my claims about WVU:
Good football - I couldn't say this about ECU or UCF, and USF has had some good years but they have no where near the pedigree of WVU in football.
Rabid Fan base - Not bad for USF or ECU, but not quite on par with WVU. Plus, WVU is known to travel. Not sure about the others.
Decent basketball - No.
Owns the state - No.
Rivalries - No. ECU thinks they have a rivalry with other NC schools but other NC schools don't need additional rivalries in the conference. Same with the Florida schools. It's the northern schools that need to be bolstered with regional rivalries. The rest of us have been in the conference forever (except Miami, and I don't think they care).
Make sense geographically - Yes, certainly.
"Academics" was overstated - Probably true. Although at least WVU is the flagship of its state.
Football tradition - No.
Eastern foothold - I suppose, but we can't get every school east of the Mississippi.
Anyway, regardless of your comparisons of these four schools by my listed criteria, I would vote against those three schools and take WVU because they have decades of football under their belt at a higher level and they don't bolster any other state's position in the ACC, especially the state of North Carolina.

WV still would have been a better fit
Jan 18, 2013, 9:22 AM

WV has shown more commitment to building a winner and has been more consistent over the past 10 ten yrs than both Syracuse and Pitt. Cuse and Pitt have gone through coach after coach trying to build a winner. One years results don't tell me what would have been a good fit long term. We could have had WV and Louisville with an incredible conference.

Enrollment at USF is 47,000 with a huge alumni base also.
WVU and ECU's enrollment is very similar, between 25 and 30K.
Passions would increase greatly by being in the ACC.
UVA is around 20K I think.

I'd still rather have WVU.
Jan 18, 2013, 10:54 AM

They have a rabid fan base (perhaps too rabid), sell out their home games, and have at least some level of national respect. Our fan base would have been more siked to play WVU than either Cuse or Pitt. And, there is no doubt that WVU has more on-the-field upside; they can pull at least some recruits, which is something neither Cuse nor Pitt can do.
I have no doubt following the Louisville add that if the ACC had it to do over again they would have added WVU when they were shopping themselves around. They realize that was a mistake, and the Louisville addition was admission of that.
Having said all that, if Pitt built an on-campus stadium (like the old Pitt Stadium, which was intimate and charming) and went back to the yellow unis with ###### helmets that I grew up watching them wear, I'd listen.
As for the Syracuse addition, they bring basketball only. Their stadium is a dump, and I don't care how many times they've beaten WVU or how many dozens of TV's they add in upstate NY, NO ONE CARES.
