police officer was killed at a gas station. Breaking News on all channels - be on the lookout, the suspect is driving a silver Toyota, he's wearing a white t-shirt with jeans and has dark hair and dark eyes. Wouldn't it be helpful to eliminate 94% of the population and say - "the suspect is black"?

I was reminded, because they just did it again. Some guy stole money while impersonating a police officer. The suspect has dark eyes and dark hair...

C'mon man.

Edit: Perhaps I haven't noticed whether they say "white guy" or "hispanic guy". I'll have to keep my ears peeled for the next time.

If she's a hollerer, she'll be a screamer.
If she's a screamer, she'll get you arrested.

Well we should be able to without invoking stereotypes or generalizations.***

Murcie has an answer below, but this sort of happened to me early this week. I had some materials delivered from Home Depot for my latest screw-up of a project. A fair amount of stuff, a cheap $80 delivery fee. I was the next to the last delivery, and all that was left on the truck was two (2) sheets of drywall. I asked my brother of African ancestry, "Who has two sheets of drywall delivered?" He laughed and said, "Man, I've delivered all kinds of crazy stuff. I delivered a flashlight yesterday." I said, "White guys, what are gonna do, eh?"

He thought it was funny, but I immediately saw it could have gone the other way. You and I were in Jr High during integration, and I don't know how it was where you were, but it was fine at my little school. A few years later during basketball practice our black point guard wasn't getting the hang of a certain pass from high to low. Our white coach blew his whistle and said, "Anthony! Every time you see that play you light up just like a white guy." Can we still talk like that? I don't know, I'm not in high school. Maybe some guys with HS age kids can answer.

You can ask Mr. Google and get a better answer than you would from Professor Tigernet.

Here's one outlet's perspective:

It seems if you were going to use more specific features like the OP mentions, then you would also use general features as well, to have a more accurate description. Maybe the guy in your article does, but in the OP it looks like they used some specific details like eye and hair color but didn't use more general features like skin color.

Dark hair and dark eyes could be a plenty of white people, most Asians, high percentage of Latinos, and most black people.

Ya know - maybe it's just not done anymore. The issue with the officer was

noticeable to me - because they were literally asking for the public help...they knew the guy's race...but decided not to include it. (It seems like that would be very helpful.)

I've been looking around a bit - they don't seem to do the "suspect is Caucasian, with tattoos"...it's just "suspect has tattoos"...

I remember reading articles right after it happened and they identified the color of their get away vehicle (black) but not the color of the actual, you know, murderers. Can't possibly imagine why that may be.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Maybe they weren't sure of the suspect's race or gender.

No - in the specific case of the officer - they knew the perps race. They knew

(and reported) what color his eyes were... so somebody had a pretty good look at him.

It's not always easy to tell a person's race. Like these guys

of "dark eyes", nor would that make me think automatically of a black person.

I mean, white person with bags under eyes. Any person with brown eyes...I dunno.

I would agree though if you know the eyes are brown or whatever you'd probably have a good description of the person.

Thereagain though, I mean apart from a very dark skinned black person I could see being reluctant to name a race....lots of hispanic folks have darker skin and when it comes to mixed folk their color can vary quite a bit.

If they knew 100% he's black and left that out on purpose, again I dunno. Seems dumb assuming you want to catch the dude.
