Who will start at LT next season?

1

Jan 8, 2023, 3:10 PM

I think the obvious choice would be Leigh, but I could see a scenario where Sadler or Miller move over. My ideal starting five would be from left to eight: Leigh, Pennington, Putnam, Parks and Miller, with Mayes working his way into a starting role if there is any drop off.

Leigh will start there…The ttrue problems last season on the OL was McFadden and Putnam…those two are not good OL…Putnam is as bad on the right side and @ center..I don’t see why that will change tnext season either.

Tate moves to LT.

Pennington, Sadler, or Mayes starts at LG.

-or-

Mayes moves to LT. (Mayes has had more non-garbage snaps at LT than Leigh.)

In my dream world, linemen with big-time size (other than Tate) play both positions on the left side of the OL, and Mayes is the ‘putty guy’ who can fill in at all 4 non-center positions on the OL in the event of injury to any of the OGs or OTs.

Linthicum to center and Putnam back to right guard. May the best man win at right tackle between Parks and Blake.

I know park's future may be guard but unfortunately, unless he really puts on a clinic next season, there is no NFL future. Obviously that assumes Dabo puts the best starting 5 out there... would he demote his bud parks?

My hope is Linthicum wins out at center and Putnum becomes a back up center and guard. We need more size and nastiness on the OL

Putnam was terrific at Center. No way on earth does he get beat out by Linthicum. I sure hope that Linthicum (or maybe Sewell [true FR from TX]) can earn some quality back-up snaps at Center. Or maybe Paul Howard can earn the 2nd string Zcenter job.

We need depth this year and a new Center next year.

Linthicum is the highest rated true center that we've ever inked. What you're saying is we missed badly on him or his character is flawed... or maybe our coaches can't coach. Or maybe Dabo does play seniority favorite. Idk but I do know that every NFL scout projection had him at an elite college and becoming a 2nd round pick. Obviously alot of ppl smarter than you or I saw something in the young man.

So, all I'm saying is no reason he shouldn't be able to compete and win a starting spot. It'd be nice if we had some good journalism and stories on our kids that would do stories on their progress.

Not addressed to me, but I agree that there is no reason for him not to be able to compete. Who is to say he hasn't been, though? No reason why a kid who played center in HS cant compete for any of the three interior positions... just like there is no requirement for a college Center to have played center in HS. I have to believe that he was and is being considered for any of the three interior positions. In a backup role it would only make sense that he is listed at C because that's where he played in HS.

Not one NFL scout is taking any look at a HS OL. Especially not a kid on the interior with the measurables for an interior OL. They are focusing on who is coming up next year and maybe spending a couple minutes confirming that the list they have for the year after is still good. All that NFL projection stuff from Rivals or 247 or whatever comes from the same guys writing the articles that get you to pay for subscriptions. It's a guess that backs up all the articles and the ranking. It doesn't have to be an educated guess...and at worse it's self serving.

I think that there is maybe too much made of the "#1 HS Center" ranking from a media source(s) trying to sell subscriptions. IMHO the majority of your true Power 5 OL talent is playing something other than Center in HS. Big and tall with OT measurables... playing OT. Maybe OG measurables, but still Power 5 level big and/or has Power 5 level foot speed and athletic talent... still playing OT. In HS, your center if can shotgun snap reliably you can give him help in pass pro and in run blocking as well. He's never on an island. (especially when you take away how many HS run a 3man or 5man front)

I'm not saying that Linthicum was or is overrated, but rather that rivals/247 or whomever is splitting hairs when they have centers as a separate category as opposed to putting them in with all the other kids projected to play interior in college. I can probably guarantee that no Freshmen is going to start at Center at the P5 level and also guarantee that there isn't a P5 OL coach that isn't confident in their ability to teach an athlete to snap the ball.... so why Rivals et al. separate out HS centers make no sense other than to generate more clicks.

Finaally OL is a developmental position group. Some develop at different paces and I would be of the opinion that in an OL room that is full and especially if full with talent that had redshirted initially, starting two years should be the norm. So by that account, Linthicum is simply moving along the continuum.

The issue I see is Parks was a much better RT than RG

Clemgalalways® At least that's what the PFF ratings say.

My thought was Miller to LT, Parks back to RT, Tate at LG, Leigh at RG, and Linthicum outcompeting Putnan who has been average at best at C. But benching a vet is never easy for Dabo.

Doh, I knew I was forgetting someone. I’m sure he’ll take over left guard next season. Wouldn’t totally count out Bryn Tucker, either.

They will figure out most of this in Spring Practice. Go to the Spring game and figure it out.

That's quite funny. We've already seen every player mentioned take snaps both in games and in Spring Ball. PFF gave the O line the lowest rating against Tennessee in any game since UGA in the opener last year. UT is not UGA of last year but it looked that way in pass protection at times. It's not really going to matter. We're going to be about same as this year and the year prior. Mostly the same players that seldom improve from year to year. Tate may buck that trend but in total the "issue" has not been fixed. The line is soft and gets pushed around by the better teams. Their all 3 or 4 star players. Did we miss on every single one? Changed coaches and that made little difference. May need to look elsewhere.

Re: Where is Tate?

Jan 8, 2023, 9:05 PM

Our OL is not soft by any means.

Our RG was sub-standard in OB more due to missed assignments. (Mayes did a surprisingly good job … he has excellent feet … but physically and from our OL’s overall confusion with assignments, he was;’t equipped for the TN blitzes.)

Our Tackle play was also poor on the right side and (surprisingly) disappointing from McFadden. Not talking about the one time at McFadden was beat badly; that kind of thing happens occasionally to the best OTs.

Rather than being man-handled, our OTs were outmaneuvered consistently … especially at RT.

We really really missed our best lineman (via combination of strength & quickness [outside of McFadden]) in Marcus Tate.

I’m not a Streeter-basher; I think he did good overall work. Ot popular here, but DJU’s enormous improvement from 2021’s dismal play to 2022’s good (not great, but good) play is rightfully credited to the QB coach (e.g., Streeter) and the O coordinator (e.e., again Streeter).

But Streeter was far too slow in making adjustments to TN’s blitzes in first half. Why were neither the RB or TE kept in to block, instead of the empty backfield in all of the obvious passing situations? A RB who was flexed out wide could be motioned back to the backfield at snap time to provide the extra protection that was needed to handle the blitz.

Two sacks from the 3xact same TN blitz package should have gotten Streeter’s attention.

I am counting on Streeter get5ing over his ‘freshman’ mistakes such as this during the 2023 season.

SUMMARY: Our entire OL is plenty tough. However, our OL needs to understand assignments better, and our RT must improve dramatically at pass protection.

Need big improvement on right side of the line. Putnam is just not a good center. His snaps are high and slow, and he’s not good at picking up blitzes. Parks took a step back this year after moving to guard, looked lost at times. Miller had plenty of whiffs, I’m hoping it’s just a Freshman learning experience.
