Real question about CFP
Nov 20, 2022, 8:42 PM
|

Assuming these were the only two options: Would you rather Clemson lose in the CFP Semis or win in a NY6 game against a big name team?
For me, the purpose of making the CFP is to have a chance to win the Natty. We ain’t winning a Natty this year, so I’d rather end the season with a win.
Bring on the downvotes but everyone that is doing all these mental gymnastics for scenarios that we make Top 4 don’t make sense to me

We weren't winning in 2018, either. You always have a chance in the Playoffs with a good defense.

In 2018 I distinctly remember everyone on here saying we would beat OSU and Bama. Maybe not National pundits but everyone on here loved our team.
Everyone knows the teams 2018-2020 would be favored by 20+ pts on this years team.

The result of being in the CFP is almost 4 weeks of focused media coverage. Great for recruiting and to continue expanding the clemson brand.

You honestly think that Clemson need more exposure? We talked about every week on every show.
You think having 4 weeks of every pundit saying UGA was going to kill us and then us losing in the CFP Semis is good for recruiting? NY6 games are played at the same time and get equal coverage if they are good games. CFP games where one team is favored by 17+ points get nothing (Bama vs Mich St, LSU vs OU)

You may be right. I could not find any support that making the CFP helps with future recruit rankings. This is a pretty good article that argues there is no benefit. I would still much rather be in it. There is no guarantee we would fair any better in a NY6 bowl. https://theathletic.com/3550254/2022/08/31/recruiting-qbs-sec-pac-12/?amp=1

The remarkable thing about that article in the athletic is that when Christopher Vizenna arrives in 2023, that will mean that Clemson has had five 5-star quarterbacks since 2014. Alabama and Georgia are right up there.
Just a reminder that Dabo has been smart enough to know that elite recruiting starts at the most important position and he has been successful at bringing in five star quarterbacks. They aren’t always going to be like Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence. But it starts the ability to be in contention for championships. That and bringing in defensive lineman like Christian Wilkins, Dexter Lawrence, Austin Bryant, and Clelin Ferrell who will not be pushed off the ball.
For those of us who remember the pre-1981 tigers and the dark years until the start of the 2015 run to the present, who would’ve thought that Clemson would be so successful in the recruitment of elite quarterbacks.
For what it’s worth the successful recruitment of Steve Fuller out of Spartanburg may have helped set the stage for the run to the national championship even though he was already gone

Making the CFP is a big deal. Making it 7 of the last 8 years would be a huge deal. Recruits look at that, the chance to play for a National Championship!
With out Google, who played in last year's Orange, Sugar, Cotton, Rose, Fiesta and Chick-Fil-A bowls? Which 2 we're playoffs?

So you think losing in the semis is better for recruiting than winning a NY6? Interesting

I’d say it depends on how bad you lose. Blow outs aren’t helpful regardless of when you play.

We as fans have absolutely no vote in this matter. I want the Tigers to go to the CFP as only 4 teams in the country can. Even the NY6 has 12 teams make it. You tell me which is better.....1 of 4 or 1 of 12.

the question does not boil down to 1 of 4 vs. 1 of 12. If it did, there would be no question to ask. The question is, 1 of 4 with a loss, or 1 of 12 ending the season with a win. Reasonable folks can disagree, but to simply state that being in the top 4 is better in all regards, irrespective of result, is to cut the analysis in half. I could just as easily ask "what's better, ending the season with a win, or a loss?"

I agree our chances are slim to win the natty and I would be satisfied not making the playoffs this year and beating a quality opponent in a NY6 bowl.
However, I would never pass us the opportunity. While brand recognition is there, all it takes are a few years outside of the playoffs before you lose the edge to other teams, getting in is good even if you lose the game.
Secondly, all it takes is two good games with a strong defensive showing. We came close to beating GA before their natty, losing 3-10. We ended up losing 2 more games, but there is always a possibility of keeping it close and scoring just enough.

We played a completely different UGA team than the one that one the Natty. They didn't even have the same QB.
My point is that we are relying on multiple teams ahead of us to lose games that they are favored in for us to back into the CFP. If that's what we're relying on, do we really belong in the CFP? We've never had to care about what other teams did to get into the CFP before--largely because we were a great team and deserving of a final 4 spot.
Essentially we're all just praying for chaos so that our Tigers can back into the #4 spot and likely get destroyed. Is that really such a lofty goal?

Someone doesn't understand hypotheticals it seems.
Oklahoma is 0-4 in the CFP losing by an average of 18 points. You telling me that's good for "the brand" and their recruiting?

Since the inception of the CFP there has always been a team or two that "shouldn't" have been in it. To name a few : Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Washington. There were a few years that it was Clemson/Alabama and everybody else. The separation or gap from Clemson/Alabama to the 3rd and 4th ranked teams was vast. So, my answer is yes I would rather be the 4th ranked team in the CFP than a 6th ranked team playing in a New Years day bowl. You never know when the offense and defense will be on fire at the same time and play 4 complete quarters of football. If that happens we can compete with any team.

100% would rather be in the playoffs! I don’t assume we will lose if we are lucky enough to make it in. All of the other teams ahead of us have looked beatable at times but we would have to play perfect games.

I want Clemson to be the best version of themselves... to play complementary football for 60 minutes or however long it takes until the last whistle.
Win the state championship Win the closer
Go Tigers !!!
Dabo always says, "Serve a player's heart instead of his talents, and football will take care of itself". He has built a culture that no one has been able to replicate. He has truly built a family and regardless what the score is on the scoreboard, I will always be proud of the product on the field. They won't play perfect every game, but in the end, we will always win with a head coach and culture like he has built.

I'd rather not make it this year, but that desire is more about opponent. We'd almost certainly be the 4 playing Georgia as the 1. Georgia is such an important recruiting rival that getting drummed by them in the playoffs would be really bad.
If LSU/Southern Cal/Michigan were the 1, then I would probably rather make the playoffs even if we got whipped.

for the highest. If we make it and Bama doesn't, then it ties us for the most CFP appearances at 7(of 9) with Bama. We are currently 2-2 in Champ games while they are 3-3. I recall 2 times in the last 25 years where a team won a championship that they may not have had the opposing QB not gone down just prior to the game or during the game. There is always a chance no matter how stacked the odds may look. And in most years there is a big drop between the top 2 and the next 2 or at least #4 anyway.
Go to the Orange Bowl and the conversation turns to who is going to skip it for the combine, etc. Those games are becoming more and more of a joke every year.

I wish I could give 100 Thumbs up for this post. If you make the CFP final 4 you have a chance to win a title. Whether you win it or not the chance is there. If you don't make the CFP final 4 you have no chance. Give me a shot at the title over a 50/50 chance to win a meaningless bowl game. Plus as ctigers90 stated, if we make the CFP this year we tie Bama for most appearances all time. That's good for something in itself.

There was a time this season when I felt the same. There isn't a single team ranked ahead of us the Clemson cannot beat. Our defense seems to be clicking now and if we somehow solve the turnover bug we've caught this season then who knows. I think we have a shot. Maybe a slim one but I don't see any team this season just breaking one off in us.
