Who has tried turtle stew?

9

Feb 6, 2023, 8:14 PM

Had men’s supper at church tonight & the cook just called it “stew” until after we ate- then let us know what kind it was. First time for a lot of us. I had seconds.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have not. It's supposedly good stuff,

6

Feb 6, 2023, 8:17 PM

but I've never been in a spot to sample and tbh I can think of better stuff to eat from an image perspective.

Animals in shells.

This was the only way that I

5

Feb 6, 2023, 8:33 PM

would have had the experience of it. Reminds me of the time my mother fried a huge platter of venison cubed steak & my tree hugger PETA type sister came in and asked where all that steak come from- 2 people said , “Bought it!” at the same time. She still doesn’t know she ate Bambi.

When I was a kid in the late 70's my neighbor (Mr. Tyler) would catch soft shelled turtles near Eutawville on Lake Marion and the stew he made was deeeeeelish! I have not had any since. He would hang nylon string with a hook baited with soap hanging from the cypress branches. Go Tigers!

I'm from the Upstate and have never heard of turtle soup, have ate cooter stew most of my life. Really crazy how my Uncle would catch them. Like grappling for catfish under rocks but they were snapping turtles under the banks. The Catawba River has a lot of things most people don't know about.

We catfish in "Cooter Creek" on Clarks Hill lake. Catch a lot of Scooters, but rarely keep them. I hate killing stuff that may be 100 years old.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

As a kid , I waded the Catawba below the trestle

near Fort Mill fishing for catfish- didn’t know how to swim so I had to be careful of the deeper holes and watch for rising water if they opened the gates on the Lake Wylie ### . Surprised that I didn’t drown - and my father was the one who took me there.

When I worked in electronics in Simpsonville, SC, one of my coworkers brought in "Cooter Stew" for lunch one day. It was delicious. While I was working there, I also had possum stew, cow tongue, and a couple of other things I can't remember right now.
Simpsonville was still out in the country in the early 90s.

I have not either. However, I was going to cook it one time. After cleaning the turtle, I did have the stomach to cook anything. I gave it away.

we set up trotlines in pond back of friends house and caught 6 snapping turtles. family housekeeper was from baton rouge and she did all the dirty work. cleaned, cooked, etc - we just caught em.
still one of the best stews ever.

Re: Who has tried turtle stew?

I ate it several times growing up. Had stewed turtle but my favorite was always the slow cooker bbq'd turtle, almost exactly like pulled pork.

I remember as teen my dad had a party and i had caught a giant softshell turtle and my dad made bbq turtle ( almost tastes exactly like pork) in a slow cooker. We also made grilled bone-in pork chops (sliced gator tail) and there wasnt a person at the party that didn't like any of our dishes. We had venison burgers and catfish stew also. We told everyone it was a game feast party after everyone ate and nobody knew or complained.

I have eaten a lot of different species over the years. As my dad says, "Don't knock it until you have tried it!" I will give almost anything a try once.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I haven't.

But, I remember the couple who kept me when I was young while my parents worked had it on occasions. The lady always fixed me something else. Plus, I remember that was where I had my first taste of coffee. The man would always be eating breakfast when I arrived and had coffee in his cup. He poured a little bit in the saucer for me. We also helped him in his garden, sat out in the porch swing in the afternoon. Great memories!

I am so thankful that couple. Very godly people and loved me like I was one of their own.

A couple of times...

Feb 7, 2023, 12:21 PM

I've had it served two different ways. One was cream based like a New England claim chowder or a crab bisque. The other was more like beef stew or vegetable soup.

Good eatin' !!!!
