What happened to some of these ACC Teams?

Dec 13, 2012, 1:59 PM

Seriously, did you look around during some of our away games? How can some of these teams go from relatively relevant to nothing so fast?

Wake - 2006? ACC Champs

UVA- Remember when they had Tiki Barber and Matt Schaub?

Miami - 2001 team was a collection of NFL MEN

BC- went to a few ACCCG recently

Best Is The Standard

I'll try...

Wake can't recruit consistently enough to keep it up, despite the fact that Grobe is a really good coach.

UVa - I don't think Barber and Schaub ever played together and I don't recall them being that great with Schaub, but George Welsh retired and Al Groh happened to them.

Miami - Coker, Shannon and NCAA violations.

BC - Matt Ryan and Tom O'Brien both left.

Miami teams were bought and paid for

Dec 13, 2012, 2:38 PM

If I recall correctly the year Wake went to the ACCCG they actually lost to us and FSU. It was just Clemson and FSU played the top of the other division and wake got the bottom.

BC lost their identity. They've tried to throw it all over the field. Even with Matt Ryan, they were big bruisers. Their RBs and OLs were studs.

Not sure what happened to UVA. They looked like they were poised for a bounce back last year. Were the 90s an abberation or a sign of what they could be? Pre-90s they were crap, post 90s they've been crap.

The ACC doesn't need some of these bottom teams to take off to be on the national scene again. They need the teams like FSU, Clemson, VT, GT, UNC and Miami to be solidly at the top. The Big 10s and SECs aren't judged by their Vanderbilts, Kentuckys, Minnesotas and Northwesterns. They get their reputation at the top.

Honestly, I think the ACC needs to stop the fixed interplay between Clem/Ga Tech FSU/Miami - having two of the best teams in each division play each year helps no one (yes, I know GT and Miami were down this year but I'm talking big picture). FSU / Clemson should be the powerhouses of our division and VT, GT, Miami should be the rulers of their division. There is no reason in the current landscape to force these teams on each other annually. Someone has to lose and it's only stacking losses on the few teams that get any respect nationally. If Miami does their job they should see FSU every few years in a championship and twice every 6 or so years in the regular season.

An undefeated Clemson versus undefeated GT or an Undefeated VT versus undefeated FSU would certainly grab some attention. Or the ACC can continue to do like this year and make sure those teams play within the first few weeks of the season and self sabotage the rankings (I know those were in division games but still highlights how #### poor the ACC is at self preservation).

It is what it is.

Those 4 are rivals because they are usually good games. While it might be better for FSU to beat Duke vs Miami, the fans wouldn't agree.

Even if you support them playing each other there is no reason for them to play so early every year. It is rankings suicide. It is a lesson the SEC learned years ago.

Clemson's schedule, without fail, should be FSU week 11, patsy week 12, South Carolina week 13. This maximizes upside and minimizes downside. The SEC pretty much does permanent cross division rivals in week 11, patsy week 12, major rival (conference or otherwise) week 13. It's working pretty well for them. Then if you look at the higher ranked teams, especially those expected to do well they draw a weaker conference opponent in week 10 after playing a major divisional opponent in week 9 - allowing them to recoup for the home stretch. They are very good at what they do and a big part of that is creating an impression and giving their best teams an opportunity to succeed. Something our league management fails at evey time. Unlike a lot of people I like the teams that make up the ACC, but the conference management is a atrocious.

I think it comes back to consistency...both Clemson and FSU would be viewed upon more favorably if FSU had been more consistent and NOT lost that one to NC State, who in turn lost a few games they probably shouldn't have.

We certainly took a step up in the consistency department this year and beat the teams that in decades past, we would have fallen asleep on. I hope the rest of the conference begins to follow suit in that regard; meanwhile, we gotta maintain that consistency AND take that next step with winning the big games. A big skrong D would certainly help. SKRONG.

Don't forget Maryland too although they are checking out. I believe they were ACC champs one year also. Actually quite an assortment of ACC champs over the past 10 years or so. (Md, Wake, GT, Va Tech, Clemson, FSU and BC in the hunt but no ACC title)

Maryland's success was a fluke, a blip on the screen

Dec 13, 2012, 3:27 PM

They had a couple of nice seasons with Friedgen including a 2001 ACC championship (I was in Raleigh at the MD-NCSU game when MD won the title by virtue of winning--it was a lot of fun seeing them demoralize NC State fans and throw oranges on the field), but they haven't been relevant in college football since the early 80's.

VT, FSU, NCSU, GT, Clemson, etc.***
