Maybe I'm just being a nice guy and hoping that if I point out that people are more likely to shoot themselves, a family member, or a kid playing in their yard than a criminal,
they will rethink the hero fantasy.

I don't really have a problem with gun ownership for home defense. I do however have a huge problem with people being such horrible decision makers that they'll completely ignore reality. As much as people try and deny it, doubling down on the "I need to be able to shoot intruders" thing is the hero fantasy. They have no problem playing through that hypothetical scenario time and time again, but seemingly don't embrace all the other possibilities. This all circles back to gun culture and glorifying gun violence.

So you have no issues with gun ownership for home defense but in the next breath you condemn the idea of "I need to be able to shoot intruders." Isn't being able to shoot intruders a requirement for home defense? No one defends poor decision making or bad judgment but what point are you trying to make?

paranoia that they're shooting people who pull into their driveway, or shooting a 16 year old kid on the porch who went to the wrong house, or shooting a 14 year old running off his property? Is this just garden variety mental illness? These examples are all pretty much older white males, so video games and the breakdown of the black family unit aren't working here. What is making these old men so paranoid that they're shooting at shadows and cars and basically everything that scares them even a little bit?
I guess we'll never know.

crime and our justice systems outright refusal to do anything about it. Nobody actually thinks cops will do anything about a thief so they’re taking matters into their own hands, that’s just how human nature works. That’s exactly what happened in the Ahmad Arbery situation even though nobody wanted to talk about it. I bet in each of these instances if you delve a little deeper the area had been experiencing issues in the weeks/months leading up to the shooting.

There had been a lot of theft in the area lately, particularly people stealing copper and other construction materials so people in the neighborhood were already on edge. They saw someone who they didn’t recognize potentially casing the neighborhood and confronted him, we know the story from there. It doesn’t make the situation any better, but it’s a more logical explanation than Tucker Carlson caused it, don’t you think?
Law enforcements disinterest in doing anything about property crime predates the defund the police movement by many years.
