Can Dabo supplant Danny as Clemsons Favorite Coach
Mar 12, 2013, 6:46 PM
|
|
Without a national championship?
Lets say he wins the next 5 in a row vs SCar and wins 4 of the remaining ACC championships this decade. He continues to create a high level of success throughout this decade, there is just no National championship.
And, importantly, he does this without NCAA violations looming around his success.
Does this put him on top of Danny, or does Dabo need a NC to supplant him?

Question about that...
Mar 12, 2013, 8:04 PM
|
|
I am one of the younger ones who never saw Danny coach. I would give anything to get to live that NC season with all the stories I've heard.
But if Dabo wins a NC at Clemson, in this day in age of the SEC domination, social media, and a bigger national spotlight on college football, would the older generations of Tiger fans still side with Danny, or would Dabo replace him as their all time favorite coach?

howard > ford > swinney and i really don't see that changing in my eyes.
i do really like dabo, but he's succeeding/building on the shoulders of what those 2 men built at clemson.
i think pell and bowden should get some needed acknowledgement for their contributions to ford and dabo. if dabo wins a national title, yes, he'll skyrocket for me, but he'll never replace ford as my favorite coach.
teams flat out feared playing clemson.

as the all timers and frank never won anything close at an MNC. Dabo needs to have a long career and go out on his oown terms with a lot of conference championships and BCS wins. You have to have some majic to win it all unless you are Alabama. Maybe lightning will strike in Pickens county again...

one of those coaches that will be loved for years. He is not a common coach. I'm proud of Dabo and what he stands for. Not only on the field, but off the field as well. As a coach, I can't remember a time that Clemson has had a head coach that was as sold out for the school and the program as Dabo is and has been since he's been here; and that makes me proud. As a man, he is certainly a class act when it comes to his family, his spiritual life, and his community. Bravo Dabo, bravo.
But Danny is a legend because of the National Championship; he is what people think of when Clemson was at the height of national prominence. For Dabo to get to that legendary status, I think he will have to take us back to that level. I like Dabo better than Danny, but as for the majority, and the legendary status that Danny has, Dabo still has a few steps to take.

Maybe that makes sense about the younger generation who never saw Danny coach will think Dabo can be greater. When I saw Frank coach, all I saw was the declining years when we hoped we could beat Maryland to NOT be the worst in the ACC. He was obviously great at one time, but not in the latter years. IMO - NOBODY trumps Danny.
That said - I'm totally happy with Dabo - well, if he ever figures out how to beat Spurrier.

In some people's minds he could surpass DF, but in others, probably not. Already, Dabo has accomplished a lot, and he has done it in an amazing way. Danny also accomplished so much, and he built a Dynasty, even with the sanctions. Both are great motivators, great leaders, purpose driven, and both will be revered in the history of Clemson University. It truly is a shame that Danny Ford is not prominently included in our Ring Of Honor. Dabo will be in that ring. JMO

Frank had some great teams, and a great record, from 1945-1960, until they changed admissions requirements. He won several ACC titles, and some big-time bowl games. Danny's teams played in a much, much tougher, competitive ACC, as did Hatfield's. Like it or not, Dabo is owned by Spurrier right now, and frankly I don't see that changing much in the near future. Dabo is passionately loved as the Tigers' coach in two places for two entirely different reasons--Clemson and Columbia!

Recently the coots are having a good time of it. They do operate under a much different set of standards than Dabo is allowed to work under with admissions expectations, graduation expectations, rule bending, etc. You can see that evidence in the success of all their programs (except basketball where they, like we, care little). That said, Dabo is doing a pretty good job of building a very solid program, and he is doing it by the rules. We have owned usuc for a long, long time, but we have been in a slump for a while. spurlid will leave soon, and it is doubtful they will find another with his FB mind. Time will tell for both programs, though. Really, they mean nothing to me, and they never have.

Only if he wins the National Championship and hangs around after the title and doesn't go look for something even better. I think he realizes he has a good thing at Clemson. If you win it once, no reason why you can't win it again.
Chewing some tobacco or going after a ref might help as well

The only job Dabo may prefer is at Bama. But why would he care to coach there? Bama fans will never be satisfied with their coaches after Saban leaves and no new coach would care to endure the scrutiny.

we all know Dabo feels a ton of scrutiny and heat and loud grumblings from us . . . based on his responses to questions and other statements he makes.
He wins a NC and he could move on to other places making WAY more money and feeling some more scrutiny.
Seems reasonable trade off to me.

Dabo will make his own place in CU history. He will not supplant DF or FH. Both are legendary in their own right. It is probably gonna play out much the same as it does with Bear Bryant and Nick Saban. Depends on what generation you ask as to who is the King of the Coaching Mountain. I was at Cu during Danny's time, but not Frank, so I still love me some DF. But, Dabo has got us heading to the promised land, and he will write his own place in CU history along the way.

Although I saw him coach at Arkansas, and saw Houston Nutt win at Arkansas with Coach Ford's players.
That said, Dabo would have to both win a national title AND match Coach Ford's bowl winning percentage (.75, 6-2) before I'd consider the two to be in the same conversation.

Coach Ford was also 7-3-1 against South Carolina, Dabo would have to come close to that kind of mark as well.
