What did SCAR do to hire a Ray Tanner away from NC State?

Honest question ... because it appears to be an example of a traditionally good program that was in a down phase, seeing a successful coach at another school and luring him away.
Ray Tanner was doing great at NC State at the time and it’s hard to argue with his success (as baseball HC) once he got to SCAR.
I don’t remember the exact circumstances of that deal all those years ago, but it seems to be sort of a proxy for what our new AD us going to have to pull off.
Was it simply a salary issue? Did SCAR promise to pump lots money into the program? Did they tell him he’d eventually be named Athletics Director? What did they do?
How did they get Ray Tanner to leave NC State and come to South Carolina?

And I believe Ray Tanner is an Nc state grad.
I do know that, at the time, Nc state had basically NO facility.
They pretty much had a crappy field and some bleachers.
Not sure what Scar had at the time. But like you said, maybe they at least made him a promise that Nc state wouldn’t make.

Lights...it literally came down to lights. NC State would not install lights at their baseball field. That was the final straw in Tanner's fights with the NC State admin.

Yes, my my gosh, it’s not like he was in Seattle or something. Raleigh is an easy day (or weekend) trip to most points in SC.

in my experience Mama's like to have those grandbabies near Grandma and Grandpa, and Columbia (with all of its faults) is a lot closer to Charleston than Raleigh.

Just se ms like a peripheral reason to change jobs all other things being equal. It probably had some effect though.

I think there was rift between Tanner and the Nancy State administration over facilities and other financial support for the program.
