Biden says the gubmint will pay to rebuild the bridge.

This is probably a good idea, actually. It will take years for this to be litigated in court to determine who pays. In the meantime, this bridge is essential for domestic trade and international commerce. So rebuild it ASAP, then let the lawyers spend years figuring out who all pays for it. I'm ok with that, as long as the gubmint charges whoever pays interest, and keeps costs in line.

He should get Mexico to pay for it ... since they'll be flush with cash soon.***

Was that his first instinct? The gubment should pay?

That is ridiculous and stupid. The entity/company/country responsible should pay. If we want to loan them the money to expedite the construction that's fine, but to say we will pay is idiotic.

I think they see it as a vital bridge for US infrastructure at this stage.

The gubmint wil be repaid. But this will easily take 5-10 years in the courts

before a penny is paid, much less any rebuilding. So yeah, pay up, rebuild, and let the lawyers haggle over who pays down the road. We have cars and stuff to ship, and people to move. The money and commerce lost in 5-10 years of legal fighting and no rebuilding, will end up costing more than the bridge anyway.

This is a Lloyds of London type of a loss. I doubt the shipping company has the coverage to fix the ship and replace the bridge.

Government SHOULD rebuild it ASAP using all available resources. Let the insurance companies and reinsurers haggle it out later. We have cars, and commerce to move, along with millions of people. The government SHOULD get the ship hauled off, the old bridge hauled off and a new bridge built ASAP. That is a good job for the government to handle. BUT, they should be reimbursed by the shipping company's reinsurers, eventually.

If the Ravenel got taken out and it crippled the port and traffic in Charleston, we would not wait for the results of a lawsuit to start rebuilding.
