was 2023 R&R Hall of Fame class discussed last week?

1

May 8, 2023, 3:15 PM

I was spotty on here a few days last week, so I may have missed it.

The 2023 class:
New York, NY – May 3, 2023 – Today, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation announces its 2023 Inductees in the following categories:

Performer Category

Kate Bush
Sheryl Crow
Missy Elliott
George Michael
Willie Nelson
Rage Against the Machine
The Spinners

Musical Influence Award

DJ Kool Herc
Link Wray

Musical Excellence Award

Chaka Khan
Al Kooper
Bernie Taupin

Ahmet Ertegun Award

Don Cornelius

Still waiting: Iron Maiden, Soundgarden, Motley Crue, Ronnie James Dio, Alice in Chains, Motorhead, Thin Lizzy, Peter Frampton, Tool, Foreigner, Sammy Hagar, Styx, Jane's Addiction, Ted Nugent, Uriah Heep, Bad Company,.......

Voters this stupid shouldn't be allowed to live.
Let me know when Black Sabbath gets in the R&B HOF, or Led Zeppelin gets into the Country Music HOF. These idiots would probably vote Babe Ruth into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Baseball Hall of Fame is probably still the most

1

May 8, 2023, 3:36 PM

prestigious Hall of Fame we have, and it's also perhaps the most exclusive. And I think those two things are related.

I don't know anything about rock music, but my perception is that they put a lot of people in their Hall of Fame. Football always has a bunch of fairly anonymous guys for all but the most diehard fans. Basketball may be a little more exclusive than those. But baseball has the best one.

May 8, 2023, 6:44 PM

Willie has broad appeal with rock fans and has influenced rock. Nobody seems to criticize blues musicians who were inducted and country influenced rock just as much as blues.

I’m a big fan of Old school country music in general, and

May 8, 2023, 9:04 PM

Rock has influenced country far more than country has influenced rock. While early rock was drawing heavily from the blues, country was far more influenced by early gospel music and Appalachian folk songs. When crossover finally happened with any regularity (with Outlaw country—which Willie played a hand in), it was country pulling from Rock, not vice versa.

Re: was 2023 R&R Hall of Fame class discussed last week?

May 8, 2023, 5:32 PM

Give me a R&R HOF that inducts important artists who are on the periphery of ROR (Dolly, Willie, the rappers, R&B artists) over one that takes a R&R purest approach while inducting mediocre acts (Journey?, Pat Benatar?) with chart hits.

I have no opinion one way or another on Missy Elliot or Rage Against the Machine. If Sheryl Crow was a ballplayer, she'd be someone with a long career and solid numbers, but doesn't merit this honor (think Ron Cey). I'm good with Willie - he had enough crossover - musically and cultural. The Spinners should have long since been in. I was pleased George Michael made it - at his peak, he was massive and the guy (at his best) approached Prince-like DIY musical perfection.

I'm thrilled (thanks, Stranger Things!) Kate Bush made it. Her exclusion would have represented a far bigger problem the R&R HOF has than the genre-issue. Kate is massive in England. She is a bona fide genius. She has the respect of her peers. The only strike against her is that she wasn't big in the US (because she only toured after her first record). Which leads to my biggest gripe...

This ISN'T the American Rock and Roll HOF. But US popularity so often seems to matter more than anything else. I think that the first ballot election of Roxy Music, when they were nominated in something like their twentieth year of eligibility, marked a turning point.

Most of the major slights are, at this point, important British acts who didn't have lots of US chart success. Brian Eno, Joy Division/New Order, The Smiths (the most important UK band to follow the Beatles and the Sex Pistols), Oasis, and Blur (I don't understand Gorillaz, but they sure are in the money-printing business).

I do agree that Peter Frampton should be in, but what a weird career. Anyone still have Humble Pie records? His studio records did nothing. And then Frampton Comes Alive was suddenly the biggest thing ever. I'm In You sold well but then he disappeared (remember the disaster of a movie Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band?) But Almost Famous brought his career back. But, c'mon, Foreigner? Thin Lizzy? Don't forget the Ozark Mountain Daredevils and Christopher Cross. Hagar got in with VH, which is enough. They should do one of those dual-candidacy things for Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros.

If she's Patrick Benatar, her career is the same as The Hooters. Nobody gives a rat's a$$ about the Hooters. Yeah, I like Pat Benatar as much as I like the Hooters, and neither of them should see the R&R HOF without a telescope.

Exactly how high do you have to be to even think that much less type it out and then hit post?

Your knock against others for getting in based solely on chart hits definitely applies to him.

Prince? You really gonna compare him to Prince. You’ll be lucky if Celtic doesn’t come back down here and slaps you in the face.

What part of "at his best" did you miss? Faith and Listen Without Prejudice were chalk full of massive songs. And he basically recorded everything himself (hence the Prince comparison).

Compare that to Pat Benatar... she had a few hit singles and nothing that could remotely be called a classic album.

Y'all are suckers for the pop charts.

Thin Lizzy never was "big" in the USA, but were massive internationally. Pioneers of the two lead guitar sound. Hugely influential to bands all over the world. Ask James Hetfield, Axl Rose, Dave Mustaine, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, U2, Robert Smith (The Cure), Alice in Chains, etc who their major influences were. They'll say Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy. Ask musicians to tell you who were the best, not fans. THAT is the what the definition of a Hall of Fame band is.

Based on Thin Lizzy's career and Lynott's solo career, there have been few other bands (apart from Black Sabbath) that have been universally embraced and praised by fans, musicians, and bands.

First Dolly, now Willie, Chaka Kahn, Don Cornelius? I got a buddy that plays a mean set of spoons, reckon he's eligible?

I don't much care who is in or out, but it seems they should limit it to rock and roll. All those other folks have got plenty of talent and have left a mark, but not for rock.

Chart-topping records are a bit of a misnomer anyway

2

May 9, 2023, 9:54 AM

given that the record and radio industries have historically held a tight grip on churning out flavorless gruel for the uncultured masses. Marketing to the lowest common denominator for profit is NOT a sign of artistry as much as it's a sign of clever marketing.

And while I'm at it...I never get upset about the RRHOF

1

May 9, 2023, 10:26 AM

in general...it's simply an HOA for a different kind of neighborhood. It's not run by music scholars, it's an industry creation that has all the idiocy and politics of a small-town neighborhood HOA board and celebrates sales and mass popularity as much or more than artistry. I'm glad it's there, it definitely helps preserve music history but the caveat will always be that it will never be as inclusive as it should be.

Frampton Comes Alive! was #1 LP of 1976...

1

May 9, 2023, 9:55 AM [ in reply to IMO, Frampton was a one-hit wonder ]

I think.

It had 3 pretty live big hits on it from 2 previous studio LPs

Show Me The Way
Baby I Love Your Way
Do You Feel Like I Do

Then he had "I'm In You" the year after. And Baby.

Not sure how Frampton can be called a 1 hit wonder.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Frampton Comes Alive! was #1 LP of 1976...

May 9, 2023, 11:24 AM

Frampton Comes Alive got songs played on AOR stations, but none of those songs charted anywhere when released as singles off of his studio albums. That live double-album's came out of nowhere and was massive.

While I'm in You hit #2 on the charts (and the title song was a hit single) it is a weak album (and was considered a big disappointment). There have been lots of records like this... someone has massive success and the next record sells a lot of copies, even though nobody cares about it (his Fairweather Johnson).

His career cratered until he worked on Almost Famous and gradually returned to a degree of popular success.

I'd put him in the HOF because of the massive success of the live album - it was a cultural zeitgeist kind of thing - and the late-career resurgence that kind of reminded everyone how good he was (not just briefly popular).
