Name bands/artists who were great early in their careers but

Oct 14, 2021, 9:24 AM

became mediocre later:

U2 - Were great through Actung Baby in 1991, very meh after.
REM- great through Green in 1988, meh after.
Rod Stewart- His early work with Faces and solo was amazing through 1975, very meh afterward.
Bruce and the E Street Band - Maybe the best American rock band ever, 1972-78. Average after that.
The Stones - Maybe the best rock band ever through Some Girls in 1978, pretty average after.
Elton John - Amazing stuff through Goodbye Yellow Brick Road in 1973. Embarrassingly bad after.
The Dead - Awesome through Shakedown Street in 1978, pretty average after.
The Band - Maybe an exception somewhat because they broke up so early.
Zeppelin - First 6 albums were all awesome. I can't think of any band that put together so many great consecutive albums. Meh, though, with their last three albums.
The Who - Awesome through 1975. Average starting with Who Are You in 1978.

The Beatles are the huge exception, IMO. Until 1965 they were pretty meh. Starting with Rubber Soul in 1965, they reeled off Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, The White Album, Abbey Road, and Let it Be. It had a lot to do with the times, and how much the country and Great Britain changed, 65-70.

ABB put out a stellar "final" album.

That's all I got.

Maybe it's better for a great band to break up early?

Kind of like a great TV show that just goes on too long and runs out of good writing material? Quit on a high note and maintain legend status.

Yeah, the last album is almost a completely different band.

Where it all Begins is a pretty good album too, though. Or at least has a few really good tracks.

"All Night Train" (Gregg Allman, Warren Haynes, Chuck Leavell) – 4:04
"Sailin' 'Cross the Devil's Sea" (Allman, Haynes, Allen Woody, Jack Pearson) – 4:57
"Back Where It All Begins" (Dickey Betts) – 9:12
"Soulshine" (Warren Haynes) – 6:44
"No One to Run With" (Dickey Betts, John Prestia) – 5:59
"Change My Way of Living" (Dickey Betts) – 6:15
"Mean Woman Blues" (Dickey Betts) – 5:01
"Everybody's Got a Mountain to Climb" (Dickey Betts) – 4:01
"What's Done Is Done" (Gregg Allman, Allen Woody) – 4:09
"Temptation Is a Gun" (Gregg Allman, Jonathan Cain, Neal Schon) – 5:37

Oct 14, 2021, 11:44 AM

I guess it's a huge win for them. Disappear, reunite every year for a handful of shows and count stacks playing the same catalog forever (yes, lots of bands play the same songs forever, Brown Sugar comes to mind)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I talked to Hans Wenzel some last Sunday

Oct 14, 2021, 3:49 PM

And he said they probably won't play together as teh 86ers "for a while" for multiple reasons (band members are busy doing other stuff), but one of them was that they think everyone is tired of hearing the same old songs. He said "how many times can you hear "Ramble On?"

I get it, but it sucks because I know where this goes a lot of time when bands do this. Basically, they are prob done.

On the flip side, NOFX released a new album that I like better than their old stuff. Fat Mike has a way with words for a crazy punk rocker. There's a song about shootings that they were going to release and then the Vegas thing happened. It's an eerie song that is pretty spot on.

I think a lot of bands are great in the beginning because it's a new sound and they get older and we get older and it's not as ground breaking as it was in the beginning.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree with much of your list and then these new additions:

-Stone Temple Pilots
-Tim McGraw
-Any good 90s country singer who decided to embrace angry post 9/11 country and then shift to bro country (Yes, I know some of you will say "All country sucks!")
-Eminem
-Allman Brothers for fairly obvious reasons
-Smashing Pumpkins
-I'm gonna throw in Dave Matthews Band. I still think they're great performing, but stuff that followed Crash was fairly meh compared to the previous albums.

Strong agree with you on U2. What a nosedive.

Legit trivia I recently learned on this topic.

Oct 14, 2021, 10:01 AM

May have already shared because the two artists are so incongruous, but dunno.

Anyway, wanna know why the sound changed? Hetfield heard the Chris Isaak song “wicked game” and decided he wanted to be more of a singer and less of a shouter. That begat the Black album and the rest is history.

Shidyounot…Chris Isaak.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I always heard it was Bob Rock trying to turn them into a

Oct 14, 2021, 10:21 AM

radio-friendly 3 1/2 minute hit factory. The black album (that he produced) was also precisely the point at which they ironically shifted from all black jeans/tshirts to glam fashion designer garbage. The Chris Isaak thing...never heard that, mebbe that was why Hetfield picked up the phone and called Bob Rock.

Lifted this from a quick google search:

Metallica began its career by making four records—Kill ‘Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and …And Justice for All—that are the foundation upon which thrash metal was chaotically wrought. Much like the Beatles, Metallica showed up to the party, changed music forever, then suddenly left without so much as a goodbye. Not by imploding like the Beatles did, but by making the conscious decision to actively and enthusiastically sell out and make populist, semi-generic hard rock albums that sold like hotcakes.

And because of this, their fans really, really fucking hate them.
