HR/fly ball percentage in NL, min. 60 PAs this season

May 29, 2013, 11:33 AM

1. Brian McCann, 25.0
2. Evan Gattis, 23.5
2. Bryce Harper, 23.5
4. Justin Upton, 23.3
5. Pedro Alvarez, 22.7
5. Juan Francisco, 22.7
7. Cody Ransom, 29.0
8. Dan Uggla, 18.9

Five of the top eight are Braves hitters

Typo on #7...should be 20.0%***

Braves fans...they are going back to 7 relievers

May 29, 2013, 11:36 AM

In the next day or so, or so they say.

So...which position player will not be on the 25-man roster when they do so?

McCann
Laird
Gattis
Freeman
Uggla
Simmons
Pena
C. Johnson
Francisco
J. Upton
BJ Upton
Heyward
R. Johnson
Schafer

Gattis is the only one who can be optioned to the minors.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And Pena can be optioned, too, I believe.

May 29, 2013, 11:37 AM

(Among non-regulars, that is)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Laird...no need to hold three catchers***

May 29, 2013, 11:41 AM [ in reply to Braves fans...they are going back to 7 relievers ]

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They could trade him (he is just starting a 2-year deal)

May 29, 2013, 11:43 AM

Keep in mind that, with Gattis as the sole backup catcher, his pinch hit appearances would take a huge hit. Managers can be very reluctant to use their backup catchers as pinch hitters.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He's hitting too well to not be in the lineup

May 29, 2013, 11:47 AM

on a regular basis...juggle the defensive lineup and put him in LF and sit either BJ or J-Hey or 1B when Freeman needs a day off.

They could always switch him back to catcher mid-game if McCann went down

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Worth noting: when Gattis starts and plays in the field

May 29, 2013, 11:51 AM

He's hitting .230 with 35 strikeouts against 9 walks, albeit with 8 homers.

As a pinch hitter or DH, he's 8 for 11 with four homers and no strikeouts. Those are LOL numbers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Small sample size!

May 29, 2013, 11:57 AM

I don't know, Braves are in a tough spot because the defense is getting downgraded when he's at LF or 1B.

BTW, what are the Braves going to do with the rotation when Beachy returns? Make Beachy a long reliever? 6 man rotation?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think Gattis can or will play 1B.

May 29, 2013, 11:59 AM

They tried it for a couple of games when Freeman was out, but...maybe in emergencies.

Another very tough question about Beachy. They seem committed to stretching him out to start. If he does, it'd probably bump Teheran to the bullpen, though he's pitching very well. The bullpen does need help.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think Beachy is the better pitcher

May 29, 2013, 12:01 PM

but I just thought it might make a little more sense to bring him back slowly by making him a long reliever and also solve one of the issues of bullpen depth. We will see though...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"Long reliever" is another word for "hardly ever pitches"

May 29, 2013, 12:03 PM

And if they do pitch, it's in blowouts in either direction. The Braves need real late-inning bullpen help. Cory Gearrin has gone above and beyond, but he is not that guy. Walden coming back will help, but Gearrin and Avilan were not supposed to be pitching 7th/8th innings of one-run games.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A Laird trade is certainly a possibility. What about Reed?

May 29, 2013, 11:56 AM [ in reply to Braves fans...they are going back to 7 relievers ]

Reed may be an easier commodity to trade, and you'd get a better return than for Laird. Gattis can be the primary pinch hitter against lefties, which is Johnson's role.

Could they trade Francisco? That would get pretty good return. But do they want C. Johnson playing every day, and do you want to trade away that raw power?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think Reed is tradable, I think you want to keep

May 29, 2013, 11:59 AM

Francisco and maintain a platoon at 3B

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Crazy thought I had

May 29, 2013, 12:34 PM [ in reply to A Laird trade is certainly a possibility. What about Reed? ]

Why not explore trading Gattis?

- The return would have to be great. Not what ATL got for Texiera, but not far off.

- ATL has two catching prospects that may be as good hitting, and much better behind the plate.

- Any possible position (other than catcher) he could play for ATL is locked up for a while.

- His value may never be higher than right now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who is catching next year?

May 29, 2013, 1:04 PM

They have too much dead money on the books to be able to extend McCann

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think McCann is going to get the contract that

May 29, 2013, 1:24 PM

is being discussed (mainly by the AJC writer Mark something). I am still hoping B-Mac and ATL can reach a 4-year, $20-28M contract and let him be the bridge to Betancourt, who I think is ATL's long-term catcher.

Even if McCann leaves, we will still have this Gattis discussion in another year or two.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Useless stat

May 29, 2013, 12:16 PM

I've always thought this is a useless stat. The fact that Dan Uggla is #8 proves my point.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think it has plenty of use. It shows perfectly

May 29, 2013, 3:31 PM

Which players have the highest percentage of their fly balls go over the fence. Did you have some other use in mind for it besides that?
