Clemson has 9 ex-4 star Offensive Linemen on our roster.

Aug 3, 2012, 2:51 PM

Looking at Rivals, ESPN, 247 and Scout ratings, 9 of our offensive linemen were rated 4 stars by at least one of the recruiting services. The talent is there. And it will be there for years to come as there is only one senior among those 9. Yes, they have to be ready for Auburn. But Auburn has to break in 2 new Coordinators with new systems. That's why the Vegas boys have us as favorites. That's why we are ranked higher than Auburn in the USA Today Coaches poll.

Does anyone put much stock in the non-Rivals rankings?

Seems like Rivals is much more consistently accurate.

ESPN had us as the #2 class a few years ago, which was obviously overrated.

I don't understand why there are 4 services anyway. Must be a ton of money to be had in that business.

Do you have any data to suggest that rivals

rankings are better than other rankings? None of them know squat about rankings, they just look at who offers and assign stars accordingly.

i actually look at who has offered a prospect more than how many stars a prospect has. i figure the coaches that are offering a young man have watched a good bit of tape on the player to make an evaluation.

The only stars that matter now are the number of stars

Aug 3, 2012, 2:56 PM

the def man they're lined up against see on every play.

Unfortunately, offensive line - probably moreso than any

Aug 3, 2012, 3:05 PM

other position - is less about the talent you have when you first step on campus, and more about development, nutrition, coaching, and strength and conditioning. Sad to say that we have been sorely lacking in several of those areas for quite some time, although changes are being made at least. We'll see if they translate into better production on the O-line.

Caldwell thinks this line will be fine

Aug 3, 2012, 3:21 PM

and that is good enough for me. Most of these guys played some last year. We will be fine.

Caldwell doesn't know as much about the OL as we do***

lol yea coaches never say anything else, we heard how

Aug 3, 2012, 5:25 PM [ in reply to Caldwell thinks this line will be fine ]

great our offense and or defense were going to be before many seasons when they sucked. I love you people, drink that kool aid, pump pump pump. Ignore history, your eyes, and common sense.

There is a term, "cautiously optimistic", pumpers call those people negative and dumpers, most people call it common sense and prudent.

Most haven't played a down yet. How bout we wait and see....

Aug 3, 2012, 4:33 PM

just how good they are.....or aren't.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

2 of them are returning starters. But some here act like

Aug 3, 2012, 5:15 PM

they have never played the game before.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

More than any other part of a team the OL has to be 5 or 6

Aug 3, 2012, 5:37 PM

sometimes even 7 guys on the same page. They have to work together. One missed block or missed assignment can result in something very bad happening. Individual talent by an OL player is meaningless. As someone else wrote, more than any other position there are many factors beyond raw talent involved in that player becoming a solid and dependable contributor. And even then his success will depend on at least 4 other guys all working as a unit. Experience is vital to an good OL. Working together and learning to trust each other.

I'll believe we have a solid OL when I see one, which is something we haven't had in a very long time. When we start converting 3rd and short, and start doing far better in the red zone, and stop trading FGs for TDs after a 1st down well inside the 10, then I'll believe we finally have a solid OL. Until then, I'll trust my own eyes, not what coaches say.

You have to be deep.Linemen get winded and you have to be able to have back ups plus the fact they get nicks and leg bruises and ankle injuries all the time.It is a must in college football to be two deep with no drop off.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well you must have solid starters and also need at least

Aug 3, 2012, 5:59 PM

2 or 3 others that can rotate in and out. But yea, OL guys need rest and battle a lot of injuries and there needs to be depth.

Nothing has more influence on success than the OL, but it has been an after thought of every Clemson coach since Ford. These spread and pass happy offenses are worthless if you can't get one yard when you need it or can't punch the ball into the end zone consistently with 1st down inside the 10. Which is something we have struggled with for years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We recruited 5 last year, lose only one from this year and

Aug 3, 2012, 6:30 PM [ in reply to More than any other part of a team the OL has to be 5 or 6 ]

have one committed. I'd say we are fine both from a numbers standpoint as well as from a talent standpoint.
