Under the radar defense

I think our defense has the chance to be the most complete we’ve ever had. Linebacking crew will be the best, Woodaz I think will even surprise some. A big what if but if XT stays healthy, I don’t think there’s any reason not to be a day 1 or day 2 nfl draft guy. As for the secondary, Wiggins, Mukuba, etc have all paid their dues and I think we can trust them. Only thing that worries me is depth @ DE spot.

Thoughts?

Thoughts?

Don’t have much proven depth at linebacker outside of the starting 3. Same with depth at DE

Possibly, but that mostly depends on coaching, staying healthy, and not getting hung out to dry by the offense.

We have talent, now let's see if they can coach them up.

Yep, staying healthy and the offense not having numerous 3 and outs will be key.

Under the radar? This defense is expected to be one of the best.

Defense was actually pretty good last year. It's hard to have great statistics when your QB keeps giving the ball to the guys in the other colors.

"under the radar" is laughable

Even eSECpn says that we'll have the fifth-best defense in the country, tops in the ACC and best among the teams on our schedule, with FSU also in the top ten.

As far as the thinness at LB and DE, if our defense is as good as advertised, and our offense as half as good as most T-netters believe it can be, we should be all right. In 2022, we took 69.0 snaps on defense; the number was 72.8 in 2021. The last five games of 2022, our D spent 75.3 plays per game on the field (and if it went back six games, we were 3-3 in those games which is not a surprise). Every play is a chance for an injury; reduce the number of plays and you should theoretically reduce the chance of injury. If you're up 28 in the fourth, you feel all right about playing backups.

Bottom line: a productive offensive that can score points at the pace it dictates, whether two-minute offense or a 20-play sustained drive, will play a large part in keeping our defense healthy. A healthy and effective defense can then be on the field for three to seven plays on most drives and then rest for 10 actual minutes.

I doubt we'd ever see it in our ranks, but some teams played under 60 defensive snaps per game. If we could tighten up from 2022 and average 62 defensive snaps per game, I'd think that meant we went through the regular season with zero or one losses.
