and every year we still somehow owe money.
And as for the "giving an interest free loan to the government" argument, I'd much rather get a surprise refund than a surprise bill.
It really shouldn't be a surprise, though. Might try a different accountant this year. Or just file myself.

big refund, $1200-$1400 or so. Sure I was losing out on some interest or investment opportunity, but I could do more with one "big" check than having that amount divided by 26. It would have just gone to better food and booze. Now, people getting refunds of like $2000 or more really, really need to look at what they are doing, in my opinion.

Europe skiing for less than 4-5 days in Colorado at Vail, Aspen, Breck, etc. This included flights.
I got no clue how accurate that is, but they said the lift tickets were less than half of the big American slopes. Assuming lodging and food is cheaper, that might offset the flights.

it was fairly legit then....airfare was sub $600 from GSP to Munich (in that example)...It's a tad over $700 now from CLT...the hotel in that reel was a bit more moneys, but still rather reasonable (especially since it included breakfast and dinner). I didn't look into lift tix/equip rental but i already know it's generally much less expensive there
it was legit the impetus to start looking into it for realsies
* I probably did

Book flights first, and as early as humanly possible, and start structuring your plans from there. I usually make a spreadsheet for trips to help organize hotels, restaurant reservations, any train travel, etc. Budget more of your money for nicer hotels and experiences, food and wine in Europe are shockingly less expensive than in the US. Traveling by train is cheap and easy. Pick hotels close to train stations if you’re moving around, especially if you’re going to be in smaller cities. Uber and taxis are less reliable outside of the metropolises.

My accountant (the mrs) manages our particulars from year to year so we pay the Fed a relatively small amount (usually less than $2k). We always get a small refund from S.C.

Since I normally get my bonus in March, I usually buy something really cool like income taxes with it.
Since this years bonus has been chopped off by 2/3 (and they get 40% of whatevee that is), and we're not getting a COLA or merit raise, they're not getting chit.
That'll fix you IRS!

Every year, I spend many hours getting all the paperwork together, either paying someone else to do the convoluted arithmetic, or me paying some website to do it then file it. All for a game of the government going "Soooo...how much do YOU think you owe us?"
They know o teh penny exactly how much money I earned and how much taxes I've paid--long before I know. Why don't they just tell me what they think I owe, and we'll argue about it from there? They want the money...why am I forced to go through all these gyrations?
We need a complete overhaul to consumption tax or something, where all taxes are paid at the point of the transaction.

Gov't knows how much was reported to them that you earned, but they have no idea about your deductions. You want a gross earnings tax, I think some states do this.
