UGA Secondary a concern so says HC Richt

Aug 25, 2014, 1:15 PM

Check out the following from AJC Chip Towers who covers UGA. Does that change how you are feeling about this game?

Go Tigers.

"Richt made it clear that the secondary remains the area of most concern heading into Saturday’s opener against Clemson. In fact, Richt said that during this past Saturday morning’s closed practice defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt “fired” two defensive backs off the varsity and sent them down to the scout team while promoting two others up from the scout squad.

“We still don’t know who’s gonna play and that’s an issue,” Richt said. “We’ve still got a long ways to go.”

Last time we saw them on the field, the Bulldogs had redshirt freshman walkon Aaron Davis at free safety, true freshman Dominick Sanders at Star and junior college transfer Shattle Fenteng at boundary cornerback (along with mainstays Corey Moore and Damian Swann). But freshmen Rico Johnson and Malkom Parrish were subbed in quickly, as were sophomore J.J. Green and junior Sheldon Dawson. Junior Devin Bowman, freshman Shaq Jones, junior Kennar Johnson, and redshirt freshmen Tramel Terry and Reggie Wilkerson were among those working on the scout team."

Although the secondary may be.............

inexperienced, I still think that our main concern is to protect the ball. My fear is that we don't protect the ball and UGA gets some turnovers in our end. We don't need them to get short field scores, momentum or the lead. I don't want to play from behind. If we protect the ball, I think we win.

^^^ Why all the fear about protecting the ball. One of Cole's strengths is protecting the ball. THAT is the least of my concerns. Our OLine needs to be strong enough to give Cole the time needed to pick their secondary apart.

Can Gurley play in the secondary? Maybe that will work for them. Uh - maybe not.

Man press + pressure .............

If they think they can go Man Press and bring pressure against us with that personnell pruitt will find out real quick he ain't in tallahassee anymore.

Please please please go with that gameplan....

TRANSLATION - (OL) please give Cole time to throw...

If we protect Cole, protect the ball, and average at least 4 yards per rush (or punt no more than 3 times), I think we win this game somewhat comfortably (anything more than 7 points).

Seth Emerson is the go-to-guy over from the Macon telegraph if you want something better than a fish wrapper and a little less stinky.
the AJC is an ACC paper and full of Tech Bias.

Yes, I would say our defense as a whole is of major concern two seasons ago we were one play away from the BCSCG and then we had last year....

New coaches metrics S&C program.... winner winner chicken dinner.

You guys will have to execute and play flawlessly if you wish to have a realistic chance between the hedges and we can't start out asleep at the wheel in the same breath.

HC vs writer....LULZ

Aug 25, 2014, 2:01 PM

I wonder who knows more about the state of the defense...

"No one knew we were overhyped until the season started." - Classof09

I wouldn't call Chip a writer, maybe a half-witted sports pundit but, please don't encourage him.

A) That's typical coach speak.

B) He just named 14 legitimate athletes competing for playing time in our secondary. We will have a competent set of DBs ready for the opener.

With Stoudt, our D & kicking game this is a Danny Ford dream

Aug 25, 2014, 2:30 PM

Play it close to the vest as Danny did..with no major turnovers..and Clemson has a very good chance to win in Athens. Otherwise, Katie bar the door.

GoTiGERS..git er done Men!
