The Damar Hamlin incident

First, I’m very happy to hear that Damar is improving daily and I continue to pray for his full recovery.
What has really struck me during all of this is how in about 30 seconds after his collapse, the media were calling for everyone to pray. It seems to me that society has certainly gotten more secular over the last few years but when the crap hits the fan, the vast majority of people still turn to prayer to ask God for help. I don’t think I’ve seen this kind of public asking people to pray by the secular media since 9-11.

1. There are no atheists in fox holes.

2. People look at God the same way they look at Santa Claus. "Stay out of my life until I call you and ask you give me something. Give it to me, then get out of my life."

Bret (and all of you other christians)

Please here me when I tell you that "no atheists in foxholes" is trite and inaccurate. When atheists are in dangerous or life-threatening situations, they don't waste time asking for a non-existent god's help. They assess the situation as best they can and then set about helping themselves and their fellow human beings.

The attached is Mikey Weinstein. He represents thousands of atheists in the military who would like to be allowed to do their jobs without religious harassment from christains. They have been in plenty of foxholes and they continue to serve this country bravely.

So please stop using it to confirm something in your mind that is not true. It just makes you sound silly.

When some of the ESPN talking heads pray on live T.V., it gives you a slim chance of normalcy returning.

Athletes are put on a pedestal and in this instant news world, Damar was immediately the story. I agree that is it amazing that the sports world had the courage to openly ask for prayer. Maybe there is still hope for this earth that we call home.

Did anyone hear the media ask for prayers for the families of the three construction workers killed in Charlotte the same day that Hamlin collapsed?

poast, they just don't make a public spectacle out of it.

Please refer to Luke 18.

It is very frustrating to watch people who are very public with their religious practices assume everyone who doesn't practice like they do are less of a believer.

My father, who was front line from North Africa, Sicily, and Europe, from Normandy to Pilsen in the 1st Division. would have said that this person is need of a great deal of spiritual support. What else he might have said, if he were still alive, would probably be censored.

My dad was also in Italy and Sicily during the big one. In viewing the devastation and human toll, he heard his call to ministry. He was a Methodist minister for about 50 years. He wasn't preacher who wanted everyone to know he was the preacher. He wanted to be known as Ben.

He was never showy, thought big public demonstrations of piety, were just that, public demonstrations. He adhered to Jesus' admonition of the pharisees, when they made a big deal of cleaning the rim of the cup, when the cup itself was filled with nastiness. (Matthew 23)
