Truth about today

Sep 23, 2023, 5:02 PM

A lot of people’s complaints were answered today, but since the outcome of the game wasn’t exactly what we hoped, no one wants to accept it.

First is the portal. Since this was basically dubbed the “Portal Game” everyone assumed it would answer the question on if Dabo has been making a mistake. I’ll admit that I’ve been really critical about lack of portal usage but at the end of the day, that didn’t make a difference in the game.

Clemson played good enough football to win that game and as was the case in the Duke game, they couldn’t get out of their own way. You can count on one hand the things that directly switched the game in FSUs favor.
The blown Holding call on XT before the half. The playcalling to end the 1H. The fumble returned for 6. The fake reverse pass and the misdef FG.

What we wanted to see out of Clemson we saw today.
1) the defense held one of the more prolific offenses on the country to 17 regulation points.
2) the offense was light years better than it has been all season.
3) the playcalling, aside from a few gaffs, was the best it’s been all year. Clemson attacked the middle of the field & got the TE involved, like fans have been begging them to do.
4) Cade played like a seasoned QB. He stood in the pocket and delivered timely passes all game. Didn’t get shook by pressure and set in the pocket, worked thru leads and was clean with the football.
5) the WRs made plays. Whether it was timely catches, a couple of shots down the field (15-20 yd range), making a play after the catch, they all flashed today. Randall had a big drop on a back shoulder throw and came back with a circus catch and some hard RAC yards. Beaux caught huge timely 3rd down balls when Cade needed to get it out. Stellato flashed hard, finally looking like the WR coaches raved about before injury. Brown is a stud. Not having him on the field is a disservice to the offense at this point. He’s going to be a star in this offense for years to come. Not to mention the fact that our best WR was out injured.
6) the OL was pretty lights out all game. Cade had plenty of time to throw the football. Running lanes were tough to come by but as that game progresse, they started to reestablish the LOS. The sack fumble was a missed RB assignment and not on them.
7) the DB play was great. Outside of a few plays, which is expected to happen with high level WRs, the DBs played extremely well today.
All of that to say, this team took a stride today IMO.
They’re not a championship football team right now. It’s okay to admit that. But the future does look bright, at least from the offensive side of the ball.
I think this can still be a really solid year for this team. Just enjoy the season. Enjoy getting to watch Clemson football and see where things go.

The sky is certainly not falling though. Atleast IMO. I feel more confident about the direction after this loss, than I did after the loss to Duke.

They were driving when the stop fumble happened. Certainly looking like they were going to get 7. And a missed FG. That’s 10 points right there they left on the field.

Admittedly like you said, it doesn’t matter if you don’t get points, but let’s not act as if the offense wasn’t effective in the 2nd half.

I do think it is a somewhat encouraging sign that we can move the ball against just about anyone but also doesn’t matter much if we don’t learn to hold onto the ball. Hopefully that will come with experience.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LOFL... please tell me you didn't say this...

3

Sep 24, 2023, 11:45 AM [ in reply to Re: Truth about today ]

The game was a 2-possession game for all of 6 minutes - 6 minutes. What then were the non-pivotal moments of the game?

Could not have been many - I don't know, maybe 6 minutes worth only.

And for the record for people who obviously don't deal in facts: Clemson was driving to make it a 2-possession game

when the ONLY fumble happened. Hardly "turning the ball over in pivotal moments".

You need to get your head checked - your assessment of what really happened comes from Alice in Wonderland.

Hahahaha name the player??? Literally the guy that caught the game winning TD for FSU was a portal player. Name the player? Keon Coleman. Literally just one of the 17 that helped fsu win the game. But I will agree, the horrible coaching was the bigger issue yesterday. Now that it can’t be masked by generational or nfl talent, our poor coaching is shining bright.

Heres what youre missing - FSUs 2-deep is made up of primarily portal players

1

Sep 24, 2023, 2:42 PM [ in reply to So even without the portal, FSU could have beat us today? ]

So for nearly every play they make, a portal make is mentioned.. because they’re all over the field.

That doesn’t mean you can build elite teams via the portal. FSU plays well because they have a VETERAN QB who is knows the system and is cool under pressure.

We were up 24-17, driving to take a two score lead. Even after that disaster we had a chance with a little over a minute to win the game. Note that FSU did NOT get in FG range on their final possession.

Point is, we take that two score lead in the 2nd half and avoid a potential 14 point turnaround, then the complexion of the game changes DRAMATICALLY!

Once again we had the edge in basically every vital statistical except of course the main one. Point here is CLEMSON IS BEATING CLEMSON.

USuC yes
UT yes
Duke yes
FSU yes

Point here is we’re shootout ourselves in the foot for each of our most recent losses.

It’s not like we got whipped by a bunch of portal kids and we didn’t lose because of the portal. We post because we the game away.

This is isn’t sour grapes in anyway. Simply stating the facts of these losses - if not for the mistakes we made then we could have very well or even likely won those games. All of ‘em.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The loss had nothing to do with the portal.

Sep 24, 2023, 2:44 PM [ in reply to So even without the portal, FSU could have beat us today? ]

Just like our last 3 losses.

Clemson is beating Clemson, period. Portal players aren’t forcing our errors, and portal kids aren’t blowing us out of the water. It’s been primarily our mistakes for all 4 losses since USuC.

I’m just as frustrated as anyone but the OP is correct all questions have been answered outside of kicker. But competition in the kicking room can only help. But the game is about winning or losing. You know, the thing that they call results.

I'm so sick of this two plays cost us the game. You are completely ignoring everything else that happened in the game. If fsus receiver didn't transfer in he doesn't catch the game winning td. There's another play. Every single play in a game has would've could've should've in them. You are ignoring why we fumbled. Why we missed a field goal. Why we have been turnover prone so far. Fsu is trending up and we are trending down and alot of clemson fans seem very content with we kept it close.

Most who are upset aren't focused on this game its the last three and a half years of seeing things trending in the direction we are now at a .500 team. Its not this one game its a failure to address obvious issues surrounding the program. Pretending the portal is a one way direction. Pretending replacing talented coaches with zero experience is equal. Pretending a qb and oc are fine for a year when its obvious they are not. Pretending you hired an oc only to have him run the same offense. There are issues. If we are good being a 8 to 9 win team again ok. But that'd not what Dabo built this program to be

Otherwise we win.

The portal didn’t win this game. The last 4 losses have been on Clemson, not superior teams.

It’s not that close in the first place if we use it to level that from being a 1-way advantage against those we play.

It was close last year. Name specific players that we should have gotten in the portal.

IF IT HELPS OUR OPPONENT, IT HURTS US.

We have weaknesses that could’ve been shored up. Period

Seriously refreshing. Some posters don't deserve to be fans, some are trolls and some are just dipchits, bottomline!

Effort was tremendous. Critical errors doomed the Tigers. And please rip the sideways pass pass out of the playbook.

Quick slants would be better. Our first down playcalling continues to put us in 3rd and long situations.

Clemson's trajectory is down, there needs to be serious changes on the coaching staff next season. Dabo needs to be honest with himself. This team isn't very good and they better start worrying about hanging on to the top recruits.

The sky has fallen. Why is everyone trying to sugarcoat this loss? We were UNRANKED going into this game. We had an opportunity with a new OC, a new QB, and as an underdog to prove in our home stadium that we are still an elite program. What did we do? We f-ing pooped in our pants. We couldn’t run the ball down their throats on 3rd and 1- we had to waste timeouts or get cute.
This was some of the worst TO/clock management I’ve ever seen. We settled to put the outcome of the game into the “foot” of a kicker who Dabo didn’t even know was eligible- his KIDS told him to bring him back.
I love Clemson football- I’m a graduate and I’ll be a fan forever- but the Dabo era is OVER. You can call me a coot all you want. I’m sorry this bothers me. We’re back to Tommy Bowden football.

One of my delights was Cade's ability to hit a receiver...

crossing the field in stride. This is the first game in over two years we've seen that. That is why our TE have been so under used.

I didn't see #6..Cade got hit many times and we could not run up the middle..the goal line offense was terrible.

Missed opportunities showing our inexperience on the field and with the staff.

I still believe in both. Going to have some growing pains but it will come together.

When the team needed someone to take over and WIN the game.... he didn’t show up!

A short field goal wins this game and we ALL go away very pleased. It didn’t happen.

THE TRUTH HURTS

Could not have said it better. I thought Cade played his best game as a Tiger, threw the ball knowing he's about to get smashed more than once. What I found uncharacteristic of Dabo teams was the mental mistakes. Still some huge games to play. Stadium was great until the last play...

Stupidity

Sep 24, 2023, 11:37 PM

Stupidity is making the comment that the portal didn’t make a diff.

24% of FSUs roster is from the portal. Yeah, it made a diff you ####### #########.

Without that help, no way they even come close in this game.
