Early look at next year's roster

Clemson 24-25

F Ian Schieffelin 6-8 Sr.
F Rj Godfrey 6-8 Jr.
F Chauncy Wiggins 6-10 Jr.
G Jake Heidbreder 6-5 Jr.
G Dillon Hunter 6-3 Jr.

F Dallas Thomas 6-8 Fr.
F Asa Thomas 6-7 Fr.*
G Alex Hemenway 6-3 Sr.
G Josh Beadle 6-3 Jr.*
G Del Jones 6-2 Fr.
G Ace Buckner 6-1 Fr.

- currently 2 scholarships available, 3 if there is a transfer out or Hemenway isn't allowed to return. So with that, it looks like Clemson will be busy in the portal again this year.

LOSSES:
F/C Pj Hall 6-10 Sr.
F Jack Clark 6-10 Sr.
G Chase Hunter 6-3 Sr.
G Joe Girard 6-0 Sr.
F/C Bas Leyte 6-10 Sr.
G Andrew Latiff 6-5 Sr. (Walk-on)

Alex Hemenway isn't a sure thing for next year's roster as he hasn't been given the green light by the NCAA for another year.

As far as incoming transfers, according to Cliff Spammonds Twitter page he lists over twenty players that Clemson has been in contact with and its still early.

As for outgoing transfers, it's hard to see Josh Beadle coming back but he was qouted last night as saying, "looking forward to growing with these guys over the summer and getting better"

Welp, looks like we’re both wrong. Hall definitely does. He’s only played 4 seasons, the first of which is the Covid season that doesn’t count. I thought Chase Hunter was done because he had 9 starts in 2019-20 and I did not think they had applied for a redshirt. He is not listed as a redshirt on the roster on the Clemson website.

According to this, he did receive a redshirt for 19-20 so would have a season left:

Yeah he's top of the list as far as Centers are concerned. Clemson is apparently interested in the #2 on the list, big man from Rutgers as well as Harvard's center. The latter went to HS up the road in Asheville but would most likely be a reserve.

Totally understand but it happens every year.

As far underclassmen moving forward to next year, guys have to be given room to fail in order to grow. They're going to get their chance. D. Hunter, Wiggins, and Rj Godfrey were part of a solid recruiting class. They've had the benefit of playing with/behind some of Clemson's most memorable players- which translates to positive player development.

I think the key to next years roster beside bringing in good players from the portal is Godfrey, Wiggins, and Dillion making Chef like improvement in their 3rd year. Remember Chef was the ACC Most Improved player this season.

No doubt. I'm a big supporter of all 3. They've all got big upside. Wiggins showed his ability in the non-conferencd when Clark was out. Has to get stronger and be a better ball handler. Godfrey is going to be good to not start in the frontcourt next year. What they'll miss in an inch or two in height they will make up for in tenacity. Finally, Dillon has some intangibles, athleticism, great defense, great ball handling and, poise. He'll never avg 20ppg but he has to gain some confidence and improve his shot.

It will be the lowest returning production and minutes played in 15 years so, no, it doesn't happen every year. Even with all the transfers, we returned over 60% of our minutes and production from last season. In his 4 NCAA seasons, he’s never returned less than 55% minutes / 53% production.

What is Clemson is losing as PJ, Chase, Joe and Jack leave is much more than many people realize. This team will need to be rebuilt.

As of today, no one knows where Clemson will get 51 pts, 17.1 rebounds and 8.9 assists per game. Because those numbers make up 66% of the points, 47% of the rebounds and 61% of the assists that Clemson averaged per game.

The next two years will reveal a good bit about how solid is the Clemson program and the ability of the coaching staff to develop, train, motivate, and inspire the players.

Lots of work to do.
Would be nice for Alex H to get another year of eligibility. But if he does, he needs to show a big improvement in his 3Pt% and his ability to move without the ball / create space for a quick 3. He needs to come back and be almost automatic from 3pt.

The following people need to have big improvement jumps:
Ian Schieffelin - improve post moves, ability to create a shot, passing out of the post, and his 3pt%
Josh Beadle - must improve his midrange game, jump shot %, and 3pt%
Chauncy Wiggins - must improve his 3pt% and confidence, plus ballhandling and ability to penetrate
Dillon Hunter - must improve his shooting overall, esp midrange and 3pt%
All Guards need to improve rebounding.

Pos Name min pts 3pt% rbs asts
F Ian Schieffelin 6-8 Sr. 27.4 10.1 46.9 9.4 2.2
F Rj Godfrey 6-8 Jr. 15.6 6.1 42.9 3.4 0.8
F Chauncy Wiggins 6-10 Jr. 17.7 5.4 34.9 2.1 0.9
G Dillon Hunter 6-3 Jr. 14.7 2.3 25.7 1.6 1.3
G Josh Beadle 6-3 Jr.* 10.8 3 14.3 0.9 0.8
G Alex Hemenway 6-3 Sr. 42.1 0.6 1.4
F Dallas Thomas 6-8 Fr.
F Asa Thomas 6-7 Fr.*
G Jake Heidbreder 6-5 Jr.
G Del Jones 6-2 Fr.
G Ace Buckner 6-1 Fr.

What is leaving
C P. Hall 28.9 18.3 31.5 6.4 1.4
G J. Girard III 32.9 15.1 41.3 3.2 2.9
G C. Hunter 32.8 12.9 31.1 2.6 3.2

If Brownell brings in a PG (or any guard) through the portal he's going to have to convince one of the freshmen to redshirt and Beadle will have to transfer.

I could see them bringing in a guard if both of these happen: Hemenway isn't given a 6th year and Beadle decides to transfer.

Unless the change the redshirt rule or he files some kind of appeal, he’s done. He’s played 5 seasons. I earlier thought that they had modified redshirt rules but they haven’t and he was in 9 games his freshman year.

The TV analysts during the Georgia Tech game in Atlanta said that Chase did in fact have 1 more year of eligibility left, per his mom. And various Clemson media people were saying the same thing throughout the season. So unless the outlets were all misinformed, he should have another year left. It's just a question right now of whether he chooses to take it or not. I'm not exactly sure how redshirt rules work in each sport, but for most sports nowadays you can still redshirt even if you played in some games that season. But obviously there are restrictions on how many games and what portion of the season those games are played in.

There are many reasons why I think Chase will leave, because of a combination of the reasons. Not just one.

PJ and Joe leaving. So another chance at an elite 8 run may not seem as likely. But who knows now? Brad has seemed to figure things out.

Chase will make one of the all-tournament teams. I don’t know how they order them like 1st and 2nd team, but if so he’ll be there. Having a good tournament like he did under the spotlight made his stock go up and scouts liked it. So he may leave while the “skillet’s hot”.

Dillon is his brother and he may use the previous reasons as justification to make the pro decision in regard to letting his brother take over.

Only thing I would say is Chase has found his true belief. He now knows he can do it against the best competition. And in a dominant way.

If he were to push from that, he is certainly an NBA prospect. If he comes back and gets even better than that.

Hall, C Hunter and JGIII combined for 58.9% of the 77.4 avg total PPG. Chase and JGIII combined for 28 PPG. Don't see any combination of guards next season appearing able to match that. D Hunter shot 25.7% 3pts and 42% FTs. Did have an impressive assist to TO ratio 3.28 to one. Beadle shot 14.3% 3pts, 68.8 FTs and had assist/TO ratio of just over one to one. Appears they would be the point guards along with the AFA transfer at two, assuming one of the two freshmen doesn't start. Don't know anything about Heidbreder other than he averaged 12.9 PPG with 39% 3Pts in the Mt West during two seasons. How that translates to the ACC remains to be seen. Will need to be an above avg shot creator and solid with assists. JGIII's assist/TO ratio was 1.91 to one. Hope CBB can secure a center who can contribute significantly on both ends of the court.

You've got a solid point with those numbers. They've got to improve. But Chase Hunter was just as bad as a sophomore as well. He played 25 games, averaging 15 mins a game that year:

31% FG
14% 3pt
67% FT
1-1 T/O Ratio
2.9 pts/gm

The most obvious position of need will be center. You're almost certainly not going to be able to "replace" PJ Hall, but the team could probably benefit from getting a veteran center out of the portal. Hopefully a physical big who can do a good job of posting up and scoring in the paint. The depth at that position has been thin even this year, so that's a move I would expect to see Brad make in the offseason. With PJ and Bas both gone, that would leave the team without a true 5 on the roster.

Beyond that there's really no telling. Clark and Girard will also be big losses, of course, so who knows what guards or small forwards Brad might be able to pick up in the portal, if any, to help replace them. I would definitely expect more than one transfer to be added, but exactly how many and how good they'll be is hard to project at this point. There's also no telling exactly what positions they'll play or what their playstyles will be. A lot of it may depend on what players are available and who is willing to come to Clemson.

Chase still has the option to stay another year if he wants it, so that's probably going to be the biggest question of the offseason and will obviously make a huge difference in where the team stands. I'm also guessing that Hemenway will come back next year because he had to miss this entire season with injury. The thought was that he could medical redshirt this season and get a fresh year of eligibility for next year. So that could also potentially be a big help, but as we've all learned by now, counting on Alex to be available is a shaky proposition at best.

I think the best part of it all is the young core of returning players already on the roster. Of course, Ian Schieffelin should be back for his senior year. Josh Beadle, Dillon Hunter, RJ Godfrey, and Chauncey Wiggins will all presumably be returning for their junior seasons. All four of them have gotten significant playing time off the bench this season and have shown a lot of promise. The good thing about that quartet is that it is well balanced in terms of position, with 2 guards, 1 small forward, and 1 power forward, so they should offer plenty of versatility at the very least.

We also shouldn't forget about the two redshirts already on the roster. Asa Thomas and Jake Heidbreder should both be ready to play next year. Asa was a 3-star recruit, and Heidbreder was a third-team all-Mountain West player who averaged 15.1 points per game. That's no joke, because as we know, the Mountain West is a good enough conference in basketball to rival the power 6. The reports about how Jake has looked in practice have also been very good, so he in particular could make a massive impact.

And let's remember the recruits coming in for next season. Del Jones and Dallas Thomas are both 4-stars. To help put it in perspective, of players on the current roster who committed to Clemson out of high school, Dillon Hunter, Beadle, Godfrey, Wiggins, Schieffelin, and Hemenway were all 3-stars. Chase Hunter and PJ Hall were 4-stars. Now of course, recruiting rankings aren't everything, and as we know, recruits don't always pan out as expected. But Jones and Thomas should be the 2 most talented freshmen Clemson has gotten in 4 years. It may take them some time to develop at the college level, but they could still certainly have a big impact on the team right out of the gate.

It will be interesting to see how Brad decides to adjust the starting lineup. As previously discussed, center is the big unknown right now with no returning centers on the team, so it's likely we may see a transfer fill that role unless the staff decides to try playing Godfrey as a 5. You'd think Ian Schieffelin would be a lock to start at power forward with Godfrey as his backup. Small forward is a key question. Will Chauncey Wiggins be given the starting job at the 3 position, or will Brad try to find another Jack Clark type player in the portal for better defense and rebounding? I think a lot will depend on how much Wiggins can improve his defense in the offseason. It would certainly be nice if he could improve it enough to start, because his scoring potential is elite. But as we've seen this year, Clark's defense has been more valuable. So only time will tell as far as that's concerned.

It's anyone's guess what happens at guard. We don't know if Chase will come back; if he does, you'd figure he'd be one of the starters. That would leave Josh Beadle, Dillon Hunter, Jake Heidbreder, Alex Hemenway, and Del Jones as the options for the other guard spot. This raises a ton of questions. Would Chase still be the primary point guard, or does he get moved back to shooting guard? Or could he alternate between both? We know Josh Beadle and Dillon Hunter will probably be the other options at point guard, while Jake Heidbreder and Alex Hemenway will be the options at shooting guard.

Or will Brad find another elite shooting guard in the portal to replace Joe Girard? If that were the case, you'd figure Chase would then be the full-time point guard and everyone else would be relegated to bench roles. But we still don't even know if Chase is coming back. Could Del Jones be good enough to see immediate playing time? How might he factor into this equation? He's described as a combo guard who can play both the 1 and the 2, although he is primarily a point guard. If he gets significant playing time, will it be at point guard or at shooting guard? Or both? As you can see, the possibilities at guard are so wide open right now that it almost seems foolish to make any definite predictions.

So all in all, I think there's a lot to be excited about for the 2024-2025 men's basketball season between potential transfers, veteran returners, young returners, redshirts, and new freshmen. There will certainly be some big shoes to fill, but between the remaining talent already on the roster and the new additions, I believe this team should still be good next season and beyond.
