Trevor Lawrence with John Elway Caliber Arm Talent?

Oct 30, 2018, 4:47 PM

I found this excerpt from an article from 2011

"The hardest thrower ever may have been the Denver Broncos' John Elway, who may have thrown in the rare category of above 60 mph. “They used to set the Jugs machines at 70 to 80 mph for us receivers to simulate John's throws,” recalls Elway's former receiver, Rod Smith."

I am confused...now...

If he through in the neighborhood of 60...why set the jugs at 70/80 and say it emulates his speed? That doesn't even qualify as that 'transitive' thing folks try when comparing scores against common opposition.

Because if you can handle 70-80, his 60 mph throw will feel like a pillow.

So if you saw the TV graphic comparing TL to NFL qb’s speed, were those the best or just a sampling for comparison purposes? Is greater than 60 exceptional even for most NFL qbs?

Above 60 is exceptional. Deshaun Watson was only at 48.

Josh Allen who isn't exactly doing all that well had his throws hit 66mph at the senior bowl last year.

Brett Farve would be a good comparison, his throws were in the 62-63 range on short hard throws. Peyton Manning was around 59mph on short hard throws.
