Toothless, worthless NCAA

Jan 6, 2022, 1:16 PM

So college football is no longer AMATEUR athletics. I guess the next romantic notion to fall is the concept of "student athlete". It has been a joke for years, but if paying athletes is now above board, how far behind can academic progress/degrees be behind?

No school is going to watch a guy get paid $1MM to play and them make him academically ineligible. What school is going to be the first to drop all pretense and challenge the NCAA on this?

...are you old enough to remember the quote once attributed to Elden Campbell, when he was asked what year he graduated from Clemson?

Neither the NCAA nor any school pays athletes and neither can change the law. NIL is about athletes, many underprivileged, can earn a dollar, or million, off their name, image and likeness. Free enterprise at work.

But the NCAA determines eligibility

And accepting money was once upon a time an immediate disqualifier

If I'm making 100K+, I probably hire a team of students each semester to go to class for me.

They're no longer amateurs and are professional students that I enrich to fulfill my academic requirements to remain eligible.

On a serious note, how do you take school seriously when you're bringing in major money from deals?

Any major financial success like the top end CFB stars are likely to make usually leads to students dropping out of school to focus on that venture -- not stay in school.
