Considering our lack of depth at LB for the upcoming season, and the facts that (1) last year’s ‘reach’ LB recruit Wade Woodaz is now the clear cut starter at WLB, (2) out of spring practice, early enrollee Jamal Anderson was cited as a sure thing depth LB player this year, and (3) safety RJ Mickens has been cited as an in-the-box nickel / LB hybrid foe certain distance / down / opposing offense situations, the writing was on the wall.
Nary a peep has been spoken or written about expectations for TJ Dudley play any meaningful backup role for us this year.
Our LB needs and his LB attributes just didn’t align.

Nothing else to say, but that really!
Some schools! Some very close to Clemson, "don't seem to care about things like rules or how the school are represented" but thankfully Clemson does!

I think we have some quality depth that can step up and help us!
A kid that wants to see the field; who wouldn't at their so-called "natural position" would likely be the choice to provide more experienced depth.
Dabo to Vic Beasley, for example, who was a TE coming into Clemson. The way I imagine it, "Hey we are deep and have a future NFL player at TE, but you can see the field frequently at DE. Okay, coach"! And, the rest is history!
I.E. we will be fine without Mr. Dudley! Would have been better with him, true. But, we will be fine.

Surprising. Never saw enough of him to form an opinion but the coaches and observers always spoke highly of him. His HS film was really good. Would have thought he'd gotten good backup reps this fall.

This only means that we have recruited really well at the LB position when you have a highly recruited 4 star player enter the portal bc he didn't see himself as being a starter and maybe not even as #2 in the defense LBer position.

He was only a RS freshman, and with him entering the portal tells me that he wasn't ever ALL IN if he felt that he should be ahead of the proven guys ahead of him. He was never a true Tiger, and now he will never be by his own choosing!!!

I wonder what drove this. We only have 6 scholarship LBs, so he was assured to receive substantial snaps as a #2. With Trotter and/or Barrett slated to test the NFL early, his prospects as starter was right in front of him.
We now have to rely on two true freshmen as #2s.

Ok, please explain how we lose a quality RS LB because (assumed) he did not see playing time in his future... who exactly is going to come into Clemson via the portal and fill that square again? What player is going to come here to ride the pine and why would we waste a scholly on that?

We’ve already signed 2 QBs in the portal that came in to “ride the pine.”
We only have 6 LBs and hopefully it’s a long season for us.

Because only one QB plays at a time while 2-3 LBs play. A backup LB can be much more impactful than a backup QB. Another veteran presence in that room would be nice.

The Northwestern kid that I’ve seen floating around is only a freshman. I’d rather get a veteran in the portal like we’ve done with Paul Tyson and Hunter Johnson at QB.
We have the best LB duo in the country. Grab a veteran that would know their role, use the extra scholarship for the 2024 class.

If not give us the name of the veteran LB you want. At this point there's not a "veteran" in the portal that's better than what we have. With the exception of a situation like at Northwestern, anyone we take now isn't eligible this fall. Besides we were already planning to use a 4-2-5 a good bit.
We were going to sign 2 LB's this year and the only way we take a 3rd is if Simmons wants to jump on board. All this transfer (kicked off the team), does is guarantee we take a 3rd LB even if Simmons opts for Auburn.

That is the key to Northwestern’s portal LB Nigel Glover.
His exit from Northwestern allows him to play immediately.
Veteran LBs who just hit the portal would not be eligible this year.
At worst, he would be a boost to special teams coverage units. This would reduce the need for B.Carter or J.Trotter to play ST.

Our 4-2-5 won’t work against 12 personnel. And the best teams on our schedule, FSU, ND, and UofSC, will use a ton of 2 TE sets against us.
I’m not Danny Pearman, so I don’t know everyone that’s available in the portal. And neither do you. We are paying him for this very reason. And I’m willing to bet there exists someone that can be more impactful for us than whichever walk-on will be awarded a scholarship.

So you expect Pearman to go find a linebacker that has immediate eligibility 2 weeks before practice starts? If you don't know who's in the portal then why the nonstop moaning and complaining about using the portal.
Not saying they won't go after Nigel Glover but it's doubtful this close to fall camp. It's also doubtful he would be better than the LB's the staff will now target for a 3rd take in the current class.
Also I didn't say we would exclusively run the 4-2-5. Wade Woodaz is so #### good he can play safety but he can also play his ### off in the box.

We need LB depth for this season.
We don’t want eligible portal players who were kicked off another team.
Nigel Glover types are not common this late in the season; rare in regards to immediate eligibility and not being so because of dismissal from another team.
Mr. Glover would be immediately valuable on special teams. Less need for Carter or Trotter to play on special teams. Glover could get PT in games that are well in hand. Even if he blows some plays due to not fully knowing our defensive schemes, he would get valuable experience. Doing it this way will give Glover … and our entire LB corps for 2024 season … a big head start.
Also, with Glover having signed with Northwestern, it is less likely that he’s a NIL hooker.
From here, he looks like he’d be a terrific addition, especially considering all of the above factors.

This is why I say I was never worried about being over numbers-wise. There is/has been ways to trim this roster.
Have to say, hate to lose TJ...thought he was going to be real good.
Dabo has to be commended for adapting...although he's been a bit slow to react to changing environment. Still a bit more evolving that needs to take place. Not wholesale changes, just tweaking....still not there yet...

What am I pouncing on? We have 6 LBs now. We can find a veteran LB in the portal like we’ve done with Tyson and Hunter. That’s preferable to awarding another walk-on with a scholarship.

We aren’t looking for a starter, that would be ridiculous. We are looking for someone that can add depth to a thin group. I would prefer a veteran in this situation. Look for the LB version of Hunter Johnson and Paul Tyson.
If we don’t find that, then the kid from Northwestern would be nice to target.

You are right in almost every aspect of this sub-thread, except that there won’t be any immediately eligible portal LBs unless they:
Have been dismissed from another team (the Derion Kendrick or TJ Dudley types). In other words, some other team’s headache (which we don’t want here at Clemson).
The pool of immediately eligible LBs for 2023 season … that don’t have serious baggage … are scarce as hens’ teeth.
About all else that exists are HS kids that graduated late (had to go to summer school to graduate) or very early HS graduates (ambitious brainy dudes that finished up all of their HS diploma requirements by going to summer school to finish up). These guys will be a year less developed than the usual HS graduate, and therefore even less likely to be physically capable of contributing … even on special teams … this year.
(*). All of the above is yet another reason why Nigel Glover types possess rare value, and why I hope like mad that we pursue him.

He RS last year. He will only have 3 left when he makes it to another school. Unless he is going down a level or JUCO. Must be something else going on either personal or he was one of the 4 Dabo mentioned that weren’t meeting their accountability standards. Also it makes sense now why Dabo said we had had 1 extra scholarship yesterday as by everyone else’s count we were at 85 not 84.

I’m interested to hear why he got dismissed. I thought he was highly spoken of previously. Sucks losing depth at LB but if you can’t play by the rules you can’t play the game.

Interesting that all the comments are from people jumping on the train that it was his choice...when it's been printed that he was dismissed from the team - ie was not his choice, nor did it have anything to do with playing time.

I'm guessing he was 1 of the 2 players out of 135 with negative accountability points. Must have been pretty bad to get dismissed when he was in line to see a good bit of playing time this season.

The story didn’t say that originally. That’s why the prefix to the first paragraph says that it was edited after the fact.
However, the point still stands that a whole bunch of people jumped to conclusions about his playing time expectations when that was never reported by anyone.

It went from violating team rules to attitude, no playing time...you were right about no playing time - he was dismissed. So there is that.
He's an 18 y/o kid with some physical talent. Sorry he couldn't make it as a Tiger, but hope he gets it together - but the port hole isn't as good as it's cracked up to be.
