Smart move IMO, he knows what's ahead him before this this years recruiting class, and I believe after what was a lot of thought and knowing the WR class that just signed, he feels that it's in his best interest to play somewhere that the talent won't be as good as it's about to get at Clemson...

Congratulations on graduating, Tiger for life now.
Go find a good place to get some playing time.
FSU and DJ need receivers…. Find a good fit and have some fun.

Plenty of schools can use a quality slot guy.
Good luck, and I hope we hear some good news.

Go Tigers!

However, we are Clemson. We're tying to get back to the CFP or even win another National Championship.

It's no surprise to anyone here that we haven't had a game changing WR since Tee Higgins if we're being honest (unless you want to count Amari Rodgers).

It's nothing against Brannon Spector personally. It's more to the point that our recruiting (and development) at WR has been more like something you'd find in the lower 1/3 of the conference.

We haven't had a 1000yd receiver since 2020. Our leading receiver the last 3 years has had the following yards: '23 (531), '22 (604), '21 (514). That's less than 550 yards per season avg.

That has GOT to change.

When you look at who's had scholarships, it's fair to say we've missed on all of our prototypical 6'2" - 6'5" outside receivers the last 4 years. Adding to that frustration is seeing so many 5'10" - 6' white WR's on scholarship, who are not game changers, but who we we've been told was the next coming of Hunter Renfrow (in no uncertain terms) while many of them stayed in the injury tent.

Again, no disrespect to Brannon. But I think many would love to see us take more chances at nabbing that taller outside receiver with those scholarships. Somewhere out there has got to be the next Tee, Mike Williams, Justyn Ross (Fr year version), Deon Cain, Nuk or Sammy.

As much as I dislike the thread yesterday about Alabama not being able to win the natty with a black quarterback (as if he doesn't have the mental capacity to run the offense), I also dislike the implication that white guys can't be fast or athletic or whatever. Cooper Kupp is no slouch and is the only receiver to gain 2,000 yards in a season + postseason (and SB MVP to boot). If you can't have a Megatron, get a Kupp.

We've scholied people of all races that haven't panned out.

Do I wish we had some more Higgins and Cain and Mike Williams and Ross (and Renfrow)? You bet. I don't care for dismissing a guy because he is white though.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nice stretch to make it about race...

Jan 3, 2024, 6:34 PM
Reply

I shouldn't have generalized, but I also didn't want to list players names. But, since you made your comments, here is the list below of the ones I'm referencing over the last 3 years.

Only one them has truly elite speed (Cole Turner). Stellato is close, but per my previous post, they, along with many others on this list have been largely unavailable.

Brannon Spector
Troy Stellato
Hamp Greene
Clay Swinney
Cole Turner
Hampton Earle
Will Taylor
Will Brown
Drew Swinney

So my point remains.... When you look at this group of 9 players from the last 3 years they all have the same abilities, have been largely injured, and have not been a threat.

None of them were able to get seperation, stretch the field or go up and win 50/50 balls they way we've been accustomed to seeing from 2011 - 2020. Why we had so many of the same type of receiver (when 2-3 would have done the same job) still baffles me.

This all said, I'm more than excited for Wesco and Moore. I hope they can stay healthy and provide us something that (Ladson, Ngata, Collins, Collins, EJ Williams, Ajou) wasn't able to really produce either.

I hope we continue to go after the prototypical 6'2" - 6'5" receiver (more aggressively, even) that has made our offense more difficult to defend.

When I see Washington's WR corp, it took me back to what we used to have, when we were at our most dangerous.

And that's the original intent of the portal. It helps our team and like you said, he and Dabo had a talk, knew he'd see only scout and mop duty... and there's no doubt in my mind that Dabo put the decision in his hand and told him he had a spot.

Zero problem with any transfer that graduated and is mature enough to realize his depth chart. Hopefully he'll stay in our region so we'll see him play.

WRs next year:

Troy Stellato (rsJR)
Adam Randall (JR)
Antonio Williams (rsSO)
Cole Turner (rsSO)
Tyler Brown (SO)
Ronan Hanafin (SO)
Tink Kelley (rsFR)
Noble Johnson (rsFR)
Bryant Wesco (FR)
TJ Moore (FR)

I'm cautiously optimistic about this group. I still believe the success of our WRs hinges on Adam Randall. He has all of the tools to be an elite outside WR. We need a consistent deep threat. Everything else will open up and Cade will look a whole lot better.

Some snaps to another good player Stellato. Can't say I'm surprised, or blame him. He's looking for one last chance to break through. I really liked yhe way he played, but have to say Stelloto has been better.

Never lived up to the #13 jersey. Hope we give it to someone good next season.
