A beautiful thing. Go Tigers. We have just begun. We are headed to our rightful place in college football. We win the right way.....being " All In" and ensuring " Best is the Standard ".

I can’t argue with this pick, but I always thought the 1978 team was best...better than 1981.

season. Only 2 teams scored more than 15 points, the classic ACC title game at Maryland where the Terps scored 24 in the 28-24 Clemson wn. The other was SCAR in the 41-23 Clemson win. SCAR scores a late TD to get to the 23 points.
The 1978 defense had stars players such as Jim Stuckey, Jeff Bryant, Rich Tuten, Jonathan Brooks, Bubba Brown,Randy Scott, Willie Underwood, and Rex Varn.
The 1978 team had a better QB than 1981, and had a much better overall offense. Yes, we scored 82 on Wake in 1981, but Wake was just bad. The only other teams the 1981 team scored more than 30 points was the first game against Wofford, 45 points, and we scored 38 against a bad Duke team.
The 1978 team scored at least 30 points in all but 4 games. While the 1981 team failed to score 30 points in 9 of the 12 games during the season.
The difference between the 1978 team and the 1981 team was playing UGa at Clemson in 1981
The 1978 team's only loss was 12-0 to UGa in Athens. Clemson had a boatload of turnovers. The same thing happened in Athens in 1980, where Clemson lost 20-16. I will never forget the mid second quarter stats in 1980 where Clemson had 206 yards of total offense, and the eventual National Champs UGA team had just 15 total yards of offense, yes 15 yards of offense, but were winning 14-0 off of a 60 yard punt return TD by UGa DB Scott Woerner, and a Scott Woerner int in the UGA end zone that was returned all the way to the Clemson 2 yard line setting up a 4 play 2 yard TD drive for UGA. Clemson lost to UGa 20-16, outgaining UGa by more than 200 yards of total offense. Can you tell I hate UGa?
I was a senior at Clemson during the 1981-1982 academic year, and had many friends on the team. A fair number of those 1981 team members also played on that 1978 team. Both were great, and the NC in 1981 will definitely put them over the 1978 team, but the overall talent on both teams is very comparable.

Yours is one of the best posts I have ever read on TigerNet. Thanks for sharing all those stats!
I have always thought that both the '78 and '81 teams were comparable. I think the Fuller offense of '78 was better while the Jeff Davis defense of '81 was better, but yes the '78 defense was very good too.
Clearly the best four Clemson teams are '78, '81, '15 and '16 in chronological order, not ranking them. Interestingly, three of those four teams were led by number 4 at QB.

There are so many factors that go into winning a game like that, but we had great tight end play that night!

I think that's what last year's team and possibly this year's team is missing

Leggett was basically just a large receiver that was a match up nightmare for opponents. Not easy to replace a 6'5 250 pound TE that has wheels & moves.
As well as we recruit, it puzzles me why since Leggett's departure we go after 6'2'ish TE's. A tall rangy tight end is much more effective in the passing game - especially in college ball.

Didn't the '81 team have about 21 0r 22 players that went on to play professional football? That is pretty incredible.
