at Mt Mitchell NC, the highest peak East of The Rockies!
Will is now 53, been running in various events for 25+ years, has had Covid once or twice, probably has worn out his knees doing the Iron Man and other long & grueling events such as the infamous "Rim to Rim to Rim" twice in last 3 years at Grand Canyon..and he's performing against young Turks over half his age.
Saying, this 1991 Clemson Tiger Grad is struggling!
Just heard from the event that he had done just enough miles since 4:30 am Friday morn to barely make the 30 hour cut-off time b/4 being disqualified so he gets an additional 10 hrs to finish the 12-18 miles he still needs to be classified as a finisher.
I've been very concerned while tracking him online since 4:30 AM Friday morn since I realized that 50 of those 100 miles of trails go up to the summit of 6680 ft above sea level..
but then the descent last night in the dark to accomplish the last 50 miles is even more difficult with the need of a head lamp, using ski-like poles for leverage & stability since the downward grades work doubly hard on the knees & glutes.
Will is a fighter and a Tiger, so lets please inwardly be thinking of him and pulling for his safe & timely finish!

... the last cutoff line was at Aid Station 10 (76.2). He had to make it there by 11:00 AM. Now he just has to finish by 8:30 tonight. No more cut off time limits.
Do you have any later information on him than that?
I'm not real familiar with the terrain he's in, but I think it is more rolling hills and not drastic elevation changes.
Hopefully, he'll make it. But, 24 miles in 10 hours is tough considering what he's just come through.

Praying that Will finishes in the allowed time to qualify as a finisher because it means so much to him, but mostly that he finishes safely. You both have reason to be proud no matter where he finishes.

I have no idea how accurate it is. But, they have him with less than 12 miles to go at 4:00 this afternoon. That would mean he has 4 1/2 hours to finish.

and he was highly confident since he had gone there 7 times in last 2 months or so to learn the terrain as well as to get acclimated to the extreme altitudes and changes that occurred going up & then down to the 6686 ft peak.
Will is slowly moving it appears and seems to have left the last aid station with only 2 runners behind him and they appear to be chasing him down.
There are still more than a dozen runners ahead of him but all are within striking distant of the finish.

Had to open a new page and start all over. At 6:49 he's got just over 4 miles to go.
Gonna be close. Looks like the rest of the course is a road that follows a creek. If so, that's a lot better than running through the woods on a hiking path. Gradual downhill slope. He's got to be totally exhausted.

Folks, I apologize. I am getting excited. I ran a couple of marathons and did a half-ironman triathlon when I was 20 years younger than Bill.
I have a little bit of understanding just how much pain he is in right now. It is amazing the mental toughness he has.

It's gonna be real close but either way I could not be more proud of Will even if he'd won the race.
I figure he will still try to cross the finish line even if the 40 hour limit is missed and it's dark!

The website says he finished at 39:27:30. (7:27 PM)
They still have his icon on the course, but there is a note saying they may be delayed in updating it. Thanks to Ironman Tiger for pointing that out.
