Thoughts on the Defense against UGA?

May 6, 2014, 10:57 AM

WE're going to be playing a UGA team that returns most of their offensive talent. The only key lossses I can see are on the OL, and the lose of Murray.

I think our D will look something like this:

WDE: Beasley/Ebo
DT: Reader/Watkins/Pagano
DT: Jarett/Watson/Williams
SDE:Lawson/Barnes
(Note: Crawford is suspended for being stupid)

WILL: Steward/Boulware
MIKE: Anthony/Goodson
SAM: Burrell/O'Dainel
(Note: We have crazy depth at LB so this is my best guess)

CB: Alexander/Baker
CB: Tankersly/Jenkins
FS: Kearse/Blanks
SS: Smith/Wiggins

I look for our D to come out very strong with so much talent and returning experience. Everything I've seen and heard leads me to think that Alexander is the truth and would have started day 2 last year had he stayed healthy.

The key to beating UGA will be stopping the run. I have seen very little that makes me fear Mason as a QB and them losing 3 starters on the OL spells doom against our deep and talented DL. Gurshall will have a long day against our DTs and the threat of Bealsey and Lawson coming off the ede means that double teams will be hard to come by.

The young secondary is going to be tested and has to keep their eyes out of the backfield worrying about UGA's RBs. That being said. I expect a lot of quick screens out of Mason to get him comfortable and to stymie the pass rush that they know is coming. Our DBs will have to tackle well and more importantly jam their WRs to disrupt the timing of their routes. Last year was the first time I saw us do such a thing in a while and it gives me faith in coach Reed and Venables to get the boys ready.

LBs just need to trust their eyes and the two new starters should have enough experience by this point to make a good impact. I can't wait to see them cut loose and as long as out DT's hold their gap the LBs will have a field day.

All in all I think with better safety play last year our D would have been even more impressive then it was. This year with four returning starters with more experience the safety position should at least be solid if not a strength by mid season.

As long as they guys come out focused I could see us holding UGA to under 28 points.

Thoughts?

I totally expect UGA to run a lot against us, so I expect us to stack the box most times. They have Gurley and Marshall - both premiere TB's, but they also have Douglas and Green who are darn good too. Their QB is just not all that yet. I hope he doesn't get great against us. :)

With that said, I expect our D to handle their Oline pretty well even though they almost have everyone back (I think they lose an OG).

We just need to stop those 'chunk' plays that Gurley and Marshall can destroy teams with. I expect to see a very tired Gurley at the end of this game.

Douglas has had a problem holding onto the ball and Green has moved to DB.

Blanks will see the majority of his snaps at nickelback essentially splitting time with whoever is at SLB. Jadar and Jayron will split time at safety and smith will hold down the other safety spot. Wiggins will see time there and at NB too.

Also I wish we would give them a 4-4 look with Anthony and bouleware in the middle, steward outside and let smith walk down like a spur and tell jayron he is the last man and not to play the run unless he sees a RB breaking out past the backers, assume play action every time.

Unless Kearse has improved his eyes I say no to that

May 6, 2014, 11:38 AM

Kearse got eaten alive last year mainly on play action and having his eyes in the backfield. To be honest he made the most mistakes in the OSU game. However he was a freshmen and I think he'll be much improved. I'd rather walk him up close and allow Smith to be the last safety. He's not as talented but of the 4-5 safeties we played last year he was the most consistent and didn't have blown assignments.

He isn't as talented in the open field, got beat with bad angles, he gave up Todd gurleys long TD. Kearse doesn't miss that. Reasons why I choose l him are he will be improved or won't play period. You either get better or worse. And he is better in the open field pass or run, his eyes are the only thing and film will teach him that if he will let it.

Thought for sure that Blanks gave up Gurely's TD

and Smith tried to come from the other side of the field but couldn't catch up to him?

UGA will rely heavily on play action pass....

May 6, 2014, 12:01 PM

especially if they can get the running game going.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

If they start getting 4 or 5 yards a rush we are toast. We have got to be able to cover their WR's and not play any kind of Zone D.

You'll probably see some of both***

Yeah Venables likes to play both

May 6, 2014, 3:23 PM

I noticed us playing press man against them last year at times and other times falling back into a zone.

You forgot their all-sec TE Arthur Lynch.
