Thoughts on Clemson Football

Sep 5, 2023, 7:24 AM

I realize 1 game does not make or break our season, but our margin for error has now become razor thin for 2023, and I am not sure this team has all the tools to achieve all the goals.

I expected a lot more from Cade than what we have seen so far. Sliding on 4th down instead of diving is just an indication that he does not fully grasp the situation.

This is not an elite team with the group of receivers we currently have. None of these guys scare the opponent. Cole Turner was fairly well covered on a deep ball and at the end of the play and he was still standing because he made no effort to go up and take the ball out of the air. At least go up after the ball and try to get a PI call on the defender. Adam Randall, supposedly healed from this ACL, dropped a pass because he heard footsteps and was afraid to take the hit. Why is Noble Johnson not playing? Given all the positive reviews out of fall camp he should be playing now.

Defense was ok, but Wes Goodwin is definitely no Venables and is never going to be. Elite talent on the filed is going to make plays, but overall the defense has taken a major step back since Venables left. Defense will again be top 25 but not elite given the talent level.

Special teams is killing us in the last 4 games. If I heard correctly, we are 2 for 9 on last 9 field goals including a botched fake vs Tennessee, and multiple blocked field goals and blocked punts.

And finally I am going to say, it is time for Dabo to get off his high horse on the transfer portal and walk-on scholarships. Loyalty to players is all great, but we need playmakers especially at receiver. I watched the FSU/ LSU game and the FSU receivers are LIGHT YEARS better than ours. Hell, I saw receivers at Colorado that are better than ours.

Is this going to be a bad team? No. I see this as a 8, 9 or 10 win team given our schedule. Only way we pull out some of those games is if our defense plays out of its mind, we win the turnover battles, and we run the ball effectively to control the clock and score TDs when we get 1st and goal from the 1.

Love our Tigers, but frustrated that after 2 years of bad offense, we start 2023 with more bad offense and poor execution.
