Thoughts on Brownell and program direction...

Mar 15, 2014, 12:18 PM

I'm around a lot of basketball, and what I saw this year was nothing short of amazing. There was a reason we were picked 14th. We finish with 20 wins and 10-8 in ACC play. Do you realize how close we were to 12-6 or even 11-5 in the ACC? I mean close, as in, just a few seconds TOTAL.

At first, the feeling wasa that we were overachieving with an "less talented" bunch. But as the year went on, it became apparent to me that BB knows what he's doing on the recruiting trail as well. He's got guys who EXCEL in his system. Nnoko is going to be an all ACC guy. I think Jaron is capable of putting up KJ like numbers at some point. We are long and athletic and defend well. These guys have definately been coached well, but BB has recruited all the right pieces.

You can also see the player development under BB, with people such as Grant, Stitt, KJ, Hall, Nnoko, and just about anyone else who got minutes this year.

BB's not a "rah rah" guy, but he's got a fire inside and he's able to get our guys to play at an EXTREMELY high level. I absolutely believe he takes the "perception" of Clemson basketball personal, and that's why he wanted last night so bad.

Make no mistake, he brought this team to G'Boro to win the ACCT. That was the goal, and he had them believing we could.

He's also the best manager of the game that I've ever seen. Keep him here, and Clemson basketball will thrive.

100% in support of Brownell. Think he could be a lifer at Clemson and build a very quality program.

My concern is can we keep him here!***

Last season we lost several games under five points if I remember correctly. This season they were either wins or 1 point or overtime losses. I expect incremental improvement again next year.

About recruiting . . .

Mar 15, 2014, 1:02 PM

I agree with everything you say about the job Brownell is doing, his inner fire, and his ability to get the most out of his players, his game management, etc..

As for recruiting, he obviously has an eye for recruits with potential. He can pick a diamond in the rough, guys that are coachable and can develop under his tutelage, no doubt about it. However, if he could have had any players he wanted, if he could have had his pick of all of the high school recruits in the land over the last few years, we would not have Nnoko, Hall, KJ, or any of our players. I love them all and kudos to them, and to Brownell for recognizing their potential, but we have them because they were the best we could get. Winning with players like them is doing it the hard way.

We will probably never be able to recruit like UNC, Dook, Syracuse, etc., but there is still plenty of room for improvement without reaching that level. I know we came very close this year, but I think for our program to get to the next level, and consistently be a top tier ACC team and go deeper into the NCAA tournament, we will have to attract some better, more college ready players. I think Brownell knows it, and it looks like we may be heading in that direction.

if it isn't one of the best coaching jobs in the nation, i don't know what is. He got everything out of this team that could have been gotten. If you take a couple of bad plays away, we are 12-6 in the ACC and not even debating the NCAA Tourney right now. We have no true explosive scorers, developing players all over the team who are learning to play the game, and a stifling defensive mindset that it a true sign of a team that is coached hard. We have no size per se, and no NBA ready guys. KJ is not NBA ready by any stretch of the imagination, shoulder injury or not. He's not a pure shooter and he remains more of an athlete than anything. He's SF or SG size but isn't a great ball handler yet. BB coached the hell out of this team and that's why they've become my favorite Tiger BB team other than the Nance led teams back in the day when I was a young man. I cannot wait to see them next year. Nnoko is going to be a beast and he's turning into a leader with some offensive skils right before our eyes. Lock BB down with a long term deal immediately and sit back and watch the show. Clemson under BB will be a hellish team to play against for years because i guarantee you that our O will improve but you can count on defensive ruthlessness will ALWAYS be a part of his teams.

I think he's doing an outstanding job.

Mar 15, 2014, 1:21 PM

This team is his first with entirely his own players. What we have seen this year is a team with cohesiveness, chemistry, and who plays their tails off. They play amazing defense, have developed their skills, and never give up. Just a really special team.

People like to question his recruiting, but it is definitely improving. Nnoko is going to be really good. Blossomgame was a good get, and I think Ajukwa will prove to be a nice player too. Next year, we have Grantham coming in (who chose us over Michigan and others) and DeVoe (who was just named a Parade All-American). Basketball recruiting requires time to develop relationships, and Brownell is clearly succeeding at it. I think he will ultimately prove to be a very good recruiter.

I think this will be a top 25 team in a year or two and we will be regretting the capacity reduction at Littlejohn.

This team was fun to watch and easy to root for. They played hard and represented CU well. Here's hoping for a nice NIT run.

I agree with your post. Very well said and thought out.
And all of us would like to believe that Brad is getting
this turned around. But its going be hard to believe its
being done on 1 descent year (which is all we've had,so
far).
Now, I'm not so blinded to believe that Clemson is going
run the ACC in basketball. Just being a mid-level team
consistently would be good enough. Cause I know it can be
done here. And while I wasn't an avid BB fan, if this is
the beginning of moving in the right direction. I'm all
for getting on board.

Hey, it had to happen with Dabo, so why not Brad..right.

Get to the NIT and lets make SOME SERIOUS NOISE!!!

Agree wholeheartedly that BB is an ouysyanding coach and we need to do everything possible to keep him here. I may not know as much basketball as many on here, but I have some knowledge of the game. I was a decent varsity boys' head coach for 15 years. I can tell you that it hurts badly to see games decided by bad calls. I was never involved in anything as corrupt as ACC hoops officiating. I am afraid with what Barnes told Brownell about the "blue-bellied conspiracy" and what he has experienced,he will be gone soon. It is apparent that the man can coach, and he will receive major offers soon. Reference Purdue, and possibly Indiana very shortly. Why would he stay here where he is apt to get screwed when he can go somewhere else and get a fair shake?
