Tree that fell on Bowman was 96 years old

I know someone here had speculated it was only about 80 years old based on some photos they'd posted, but I'd suspected it was closer to 100 based simply on the diameter of the tree.

I figured it was close to 100...

Jul 29, 2013, 9:38 AM

because bur oaks don't grow very fast. The one near Redfern is even larger, I'd love to know how old it is. The interesting part is the bur oak isn't native around here.

Re: I figured it was close to 100...

The Centennial Oak was designated as such in 1989 (It was believed to be at least 100 years old at that point). That would make it at least 123 today.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The Centennial Oak had to be planted on that site...

Jul 29, 2013, 12:30 PM

because that species isn't native to this part of the country. When it was planted is the story; and no one is quite sure.

This photo from 1928 may have the tree at 11 years old

Jul 29, 2013, 12:57 PM
Aerial1938.jpg(218.8 K)
may17,1928.jpg(62.3 K)

Just wondering if it was. The shape of the bottom trunk does look sort of like the fallen tree in the 2nd photo from 1928. If the tree is 96 years old then that puts it at 1917 and with this picture from 1928 - that makes the tree 11 years old in this picture. In the 1st photo from 1938 it must NOT have this tree shown because those tree's in front of Godfrey Hall just do not look 21 years old to me. The tree must be right outside of the picture frame and not shown.
