Because of the new playoff format next year,

Dec 31, 2013, 6:37 PM

I will guess an ACC team would still have to be undefeated to make the four team cut.

THAT CAN NEVER HAPPEN

Dec 31, 2013, 6:40 PM

Oh, wait, it happened this year.

Also, hypothetically a 1 loss F.S.U. or a 1 loss Clemson team would still be in the running next year, granted, it would be harder for F.S.U. If Clemson were to drop the opening game to UGA and then run the table they would certainly be in the mix.

This is why the other teams must get better

It hurts us when the other acc schools suck

Unless top teams in stronger conferences have 1 loss, too.

Dec 31, 2013, 6:48 PM

The ACC is certainly not making any progress to get above the #5 conference in strength. So a 1 loss SEC or PAC team for sure will get considered by the committee over a 1 loss ACC team.

One of the selection criteria for the committee to consider

is conference championships.

Among the factors that the committee will weigh are strength of schedule, conference championships, team records, and head-to-head results, plus other considerations such as injuries and weather.

The one thing that is going to make it worse is the lack of conference limits in the playoffs.

Two big ifs but

IF the 4 team playoff went into effect this year
and
IF Clemson had beaten South Carolina

then Clemson would be 11-1 and would have not even sniffed the 4 team playoff.

1. FSU
2. Auburn
3. Alabama
4. Michigan St.

These would all have been on the outside looking in.

1 loss Ohio St.
1 loss Baylor
1 loss Clemson

So the point remains correctly that 1 loss ACC team be it Clemson or Florida State will very likely never make a 4 team playoff.

And that would be correct choice by the vast majority of informed folks. Sadly Auburn and Alabama would play back to back games under that scenario.

My problem will be with who gets in the other major bowls picked by the Committee.

If the othe bowl reps are all or mjority SEC - which will happen - we'll see the playoff expanded to 8 - QUICKLY!

Hopefully with 5 to 6 automatic conference qualifiers.

The perplexing decision would be a 1 loss ACC champ

Dec 31, 2013, 7:03 PM

vs a 1 loss SEC runner up, or somesuch.

Is that a situation where the only loss for an SEC team was

Dec 31, 2013, 7:10 PM

the conference championship? Like the situation this year with Bama and Auburn? I think it ends up the way it did this year without the committee. They would pick the conference champion unless their earlier loss was a really bad one.
