This is where the Clemson model will seperate

May 25, 2021, 10:01 AM

https://www.espn.com/college-football/insider/story/_/id/31491774/college-football-looming-roster-crisis-how-fix-it

The article starts with the issues around Super Seniors but quickly delves into the portal and transfer rule changes. Clemson wins in this world because they are identifying a trend where Universities will lower their high school football recruiting and effectively will recruit from the transfer portal.

This may be the reason Dabo is insistent he won't use the portal and seeing this being discussed openly I support Dabo in his stance. Clemson's brand is built on development and commitment. And yes there may be issues time to time, but largely we have been successful at continually getting the pieces we need and coaching them up. Other schools, with the pressure to win, not so much.

Thus for high school students it further enhances what a clemson offer brings you and in theory causes more concentration of top-100 recruits to Clemson because they are getting true commitments. Time will tell though

This could separate us from the pack! We will loose a player or two but overall this might increase our recruiting to make it well worth it.

It’s our character niche!

Yes - although we have been separate for a while. Our kids don't transfer, they come back for their senior year, graduate, and win natties.

We get first crack at getting the best talent & character, letting them learn our method and develop. It is also an incentive for our caliber of kids to join with us as there isn't a second chance. All in! If someone wants an opportunity elsewhere we don't torpedo the kids either... even if they do it is a less than professional manner.

Here is a game-changer:

Give HS athletes signing with their College Choice the option of signing a 1-year, mutually renewable scholarship that allows them to transfer as per the current rules, or a 4 (or 5) year guaranteed scholarship that cannot be revoked by the school (except in extreme circumstances), but locks the player in at his initial school choice for those 4 (or 5) years with no option to go into the Portal.

This allows the freedom of movement that seems to be in vogue, and allows the School to pursue those HS athletes that truly know the meaning of commitment.

The '1-year athlete' would, of course, not be as highly recruited as the '4-year athlete' who would likely see more Elite School offers.

That's an interesting concept and basically brings forward general work related trade offs into the university world.

i.e. are you a consultant that's there as long as you're valuable and you can both mutually separate. Or are you a FTE who's there for the longer term and is much harder to separate.

I really like this idea and maybe create a system for "Permanent" and "Temporary" scholarships. Like 20P and 5T a class?

This would work to Dabo's advantage. Our program is built on Relationships, not Free Agency.
