I get what you're saying, but when it comes to parenting there's a line that the state should not be able to cross. Fining/imprisoning people for not injecting their children seems to cross that line IMO. I mean, what vaccinations would the mandate encompass? Would we be talking flu shots here? I suspect big pharma would be lobbying hard to get any and everything mandated, that wouldn't be to anyones benefit.

Your way would probably take the anti-vaccination movement to all new highs. Easiest way to get someone to not do something is mandate it. The article sites a mistrust of vaccines as a reason for a low vaccination rate, I think your breed a lot more mistrust when you start telling people you'll fine/imprison them.
I got a good chortle out of your comparison though.

Attempts at education and information have failed. It's shown that trying to convince anti-vaxxers has only made them more stubborn.
Force seems to be the only option.
How many dead kids will it take to make a change, in your opinion?

I'm not against vaccinations, my whole point is I don't agree with the government fining/imprisoning people over it. Plus, what good does it really do when you have a constant flow of people pouring into the country whose medical history is a total mystery? To me, the never ending influx of illegal immigrants who have the potential to bring and spread disease is a far greater danger than the few thousand white people out there preaching against vaccinations.

It's polio, you know, the disease we wiped out in the US because of mandatory vaccinations. Polio is a nasty disease that tends to propagate quickly once it has a foothold in a community. This is espcially true in places where sanitation, hygiene, and basic medical services are limited.

This is one of those issues in which I hold two competing views.
1) Anti-Vax stuff is nuts. It's not scientific and panders to fear and the natural fallacy.
2) I am hardly ever a fan of government stepping in and telling folks about decisions they need to make for their children.
I know #1 runs into issues because there are legitimate health risks in vaccinating (note: I also know the benefits far outweigh them).
I also know #2 runs into issues because we already mandate things concerning the care of children. I just don't know how comfortable I am with expanding those powers.
I guess in the end I'd think the best route is education followed by strict rules about non-vaccinated individuals' access to common areas/health services where they would pose a greater potential risk.

People look at this one as potential government overreach as if it's just an issue involving parents and how they raise their children.
It's not. This decision puts their kids' lives at danger and other children's lives at risk. In this case, parents don't have a right to a "choice" as their decision can and will kill someone.

It doesn't diminish my reluctance to legislate vaccines, but I get the point. That's why removing the unvaccinated from situations where they pose greatest risks seems a no brainer to me, and not over-reaching.
If push comes to shove I would probably side with the "greater-good" of legislated vaccines, but it makes me uneasy to do so.

and within two weeks I was down with the flu. I know, it doesn't make you sick, blah blah blah....
I lived with that for 9 years. I haven't had the flu shot since 1989 and I have had the flu exactly once since then - 3 years ago. Polio, measles, etc....sure. but you have to draw a line somewhere.
