Things you learn from donating blood.

I am considered (by the Red Cross) to be a “hero for babies”. Seems that it’s because I’m an O+ universal donor and because I am in the 15% of adults with no exposure to the CMV virus, which apparently can really harm immunocompromised infants.
It also appears that CMV is a type of herpes virus, and given that most of you have it, I’d like to see if B-meist can start a board for us purebloods.
In all seriousness, I hadn’t donated blood in a while, and the new Red Cross app is awesome. It even tells you when your blood has been used. Pretty cool.

They will give you $100 for your first 8 donations. So $800 in a month is pretty decent for an hour twice a week

I've been doing it for years. Less waiting or chance of delay to start. Takes longer, but they don't ask you to wait around after your done. And, you can do your year's quota in two donations.
The app is not new, must've been quite a while since you donated. It's easy for me, I have a permanent reservation for the 1st appt for double reds, twice a year. I'm up to 85 units donated, according to the app.

I have secondary polycythemia, so basically I have too many red blood cells. I have to give blood regularly to basically thin my blood back out. I had been going to a hematologist for a phlebotomy regularly, and it bothered me to know they were just ditching it when they were done, so I’m trying to get back in more of a donation cycle when able.
Have not done the power red because, as I understand it, it doesn’t solve the issue that I’m giving blood to correct.

after they tried to get me divorced a few years ago when they told me I had syphilis (I think, coulda been gonorrhea or chlymidia or AIDS, don't really remember), and they wouldn't take my blood. Happened a second time, and I went to my PCP and he said it was because of the particular test they were using, but that I could go take a more robust blood test just to be sure. Turns out, I didn't have an STD, but had to spend a decent amount of time and something > $0 to make sure that wasn't the case and that divorce wasn't warranted.
Anyway, the moral of the story I'm taking from this is don't do anything nice for anybody, ever. And I suck at story morals because I'm donating tomorrow.

that's more than a "oh, we can't use this bag of blood"--that's potentially (very) detrimental to their donors when you tell them they have an STD.

To post, but you convinced me 19B®
When we were in Charlotte, my wife started experiencing a lot of pain down yonder, so we (for reasons I can’t explain nor recall) went to the hospital in Pineville.
It seems we got the most wet behind the ears on call resident ever, as I soon learned. He basically did the exam and then told my wife she had some raging form of STD that was super advanced. Furthermore, (because he had apparently been watching a lot of House, MD) he informed all in the room that normally you only saw sex workers with this condition or they caught it from partners who had tons of sex partners themselves. At that moment, all eyes in the room, including my wife’s, turned to me.
I told her that was BS and that I’d handle it, and then left the room to call her OB-GYN. He had delivered our kids and we knew him well, and I begged him to come to the hospital to not only help my wife, but to possibly save our marriage.
He arrived, did a quick exam, turned to the resident and said “It’s a UTI, you idiot” before taking him out in the hallway and giving him a world class dressing down.
Anyway, long ways of saying, I’ve been there brother.

not as dramatic as yours but he did get really excited and ask if we were homeless when trying to come up with a diagnosis of my 6 year old's medical mystery.
To be fair, my son had taken a chopper ride to the hospital and I hadn't slept in 48 hours so we may have actually looked homeless at that point.

apparently some patient who got my platelets developed some kind of something that might have been from my platelets or not, but they couldn't take mine anymore.
Not sure if that is a life sentence or not. I didn't collect much swag but that used to be how I kept up with movies as they would come out on DVD.
