Credit scores baffle me.

I bought a new I-phone last month and charged it on my American Airlines CC for the miles. It was $1300. I had no balance prior to that.

My credit score dropped 5 points.

I paid it off this month, which just hit my credit score...and my credit score went down 3 more points.

This is a game you can't win.

I’m anywhere from 625 to 800 depending on which bureau you’re looking at. From my experience, your high score or even your average doesn’t even matter. Whatever the lowest score you have, that’s what you’re interest rate is going to be based on.

Macy's card. As soon as I got the bill, I paid it off and closed my account. Somehow this was bad for my credit. Now I leave all my cards open and just use them every once in a while. I'll buy something for like $12 just so the account is active and the balance to credit limit ratio stays low.

I only ever used to have 1 card, but got another to increase my credit score. The old one had a $7k credit limit an this one has a $9k limit.

It did increase for about 2-3 months, then it gradually went back down to where it was. I use it and pay it off immediately, and have no other revolving credit or bills on credit, except my house payment.

It makes zero sense to me.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I bought a fridge at Lowes and took out a line of credit to pay for it.

Got like $300 off. Paid the card off in DAYS, as soon as the charges appeared, took like 3-4 days. They were charging like a 30% APR on balances, lol. Paid it 100% off, then CLOSED the account, before the credit card even arrived in the mail. Cut it up when I got it too.

Credit score dropped like 50 points, and took a year to recover.

dummasheet IMO

What the love, more than anything else, is someone who is responsible, pays their bills religiously, BUT will take out high levels of debt and keep a balance. Like if you have $5k outstanding on a credit card, but keep that level around 5K for years, and always pay up on time, and have no other issues, you're GOLD. They're making money on you, with little risk.

NOW, pay your card every month, carry no balances, keep open accounts and lines of credit to 1-3 only, and they HATE you. You will still have a decent credit score, but not excellent. They're not making money on you then, so while you're not a risk, you're not a reward either. I have never had a year where my credit card company made more than $100 on me. Ever. Usually it's around $30-$40 tops. Now my wife has gone a decade with never being under $2K but never being over maybe $5K, but she has a higher credit score than I do.

Is what it is. If everyone was like me, there would be no credit cards, no free TV channels, no TigerNet, no internet as we know it, no payday loans, no pawn shops, no spam email, and no Starbucks. But......anyway, I'd like to think I take advantage of others who blow money. Fine by me. I got $300 off a fridge because other people will be stupid and carry that fridge balance and pay a 30% APR. Just going with the odds here, I benefited even though it tanked my credit score. HOWEVER, would not recommend using credit to make a big purchase, even if you pay it off in 4 days, if you're getting ready to buy a house or something like that.

I do exactly those things. Pay my bill off every month, never roll over a balance (although I do charge a great deal each month due to high usage), only a few open lines, etc and I've been over 800 for literally decades. Keeping old accounts open is a big plus for your score. All of my credit cards, except one, have been open since the 90's. This makes a difference. Opening and then closing lines of credit, even if they are being paid off early, is a negative for whatever reason. However even if it's a ding, it's a very minor one and it'll rebound quickly.

You should definitely never open new lines of credit within a couple months of buying a home as it could potentially be the difference between getting the loan or not getting it as well have a negative impact on your rate. Always wait.

your score dropped because of a hard hit

probably about 5 points which is nothing. It will go back up after the hard hit drops off. They say after a few months but I have been logging my credit score, hard hits, usage and credit age for years. I pretty much can guess what will happen.

don't know why, don't care so long as it starts with an 8. Never carry a balance, have 0 debt.

Speaking of Lowe's credit cards, I got one years ago for some appliance deal, think it was extra 10% discount. Paid it off immediately, but still use it for that 5% off all purchases, which almost covers Va sales tax, and makes them competitive with Home Depot. Got a notice that the interest rate is going up to 32.9%. Geez, a person could roll into a major problem carrying a balance on that card.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's how you get the discount. For every one person who understands

1

Dec 19, 2023, 4:06 PM

you pay that thing off and never touch it, there's 2-3 people who will carry the balance, put more on it, and get into a debt problem making the discount MORE than pay off. 10% off the price, for 2/3 of borrowers running a balance and spending more on it, makes that 10% discount a money-maker. Sure, they lose 10% on your purchase, but overall, they're up 20-30% or more on idiots wasting money.

I transfer my paycheck to a money market account to get 5% interest. Pay all bills on the due date. Pay every bill I can with a credit card. I put away for car insurance and house insurance and house taxes and a couple other larger bills about 6 months to a year in advance and invest in some sort of bond that comes due a week or so before the bill is due. Then put away a monthly amount to cover next years bills. When enough is in my "personal escrow" account I'll by a bond for the next bill.

Didn't really want the second one but AA gave me 70K miles for free, so I figured I'd sign up. I think I've put about 5k more miles since then.

Found out last week I gotta use those miles before the end of February when they expire...so I guess I'll be taking a vacation sometime before then.
