The thing I miss most about Clemson

Nov 5, 2022, 9:42 AM

Not Danny Ford, not Davis, or William Perry, or balloons, or 1 o’clock starts, or Spiller, or Watson, or any of the 100’s of great players to come through. Without question, the thing that I really miss the most, is legendary Jim Phillips. The one and only “voice” of the Tigers.

I’m watching the “We’re #1 - 1981” special and it really pulls on my heartstrings to hear Phillips’ calls. In the 70’s and 80’s Clemson wasn’t on TV every week like today, and the radio was the only way to keep up with the game. I used to set up my vibrating football game to keep up with field position and to help visualize the game. Jim had a way of letting me see it on the radio. “Caught!”

Got to meet him his first year at CU, which was my last.

Very entertaining and pleasant person.

You're right: when I couldn't make it to the Valley, I tuned right into his broadcasts, and to this day, can still hear him calling plays.

A Clemson legend.

And JP was great calling ANY sport

Football, basketball, baseball, his level of excellence was the same for all three. Countless hours spent with my dad listening to games on the radio. Jim Phillips really was the best - the GOAT.

And his voice will continue resonating in our heads.

met him twice. Really an wonderful guy unlike his son who posts here (totally kidding). Very pleasant and friend conversations. When I hear the stuff he did I miss him. No one on radio from any school is as good as he was. Not then and not now.

Yup. Just watched some highlight shows of memorable games and coverage of an appreciation award on Youtube this week. Really down to earth and approachable. Also remember when he passed, Clemson played Furman just after, and another guy who had a great baritone broadcast voice, Bob Fulton, showed up in his honor and announced a Clemson touchdown. Bob had more class than 99% of any of that crowd.

GREAT POST

Sometimes the TV just can’t take the place of good football game on the radio with him calling the play by play.

Jim Phillips (the radio guy not the ACC commissioner)

Nov 5, 2022, 11:20 AM

Was simply the best. Back in the days of analog I'd silence the TV and listen to him give the play by play on the radio. Was at Clemson for 30 years. Back before all games were in TV, if you couldn't make it to a game, you depended on Jim bringing the game to you. And he did so in such a charming and colorful way. It's a shame he is not in the Ring of Honor.

Love listening to his call on the Billy Lott TD vs ND

in 1979, a game I was at as a senior in high school. Brings back memories. JP called a lot of great games.
