Way too early division championship question

Sep 17, 2016, 3:17 PM

If we beat Louisville but lose to FSU, (and all three win rest of games) who wins the division?

Probably Louisville non-conference win over Houston would probably place them ahead of us.

At this point it is hard to conceive a team that beats Louisville but loses to FSU

Well were at home against Louisville but on the road at FSU.

FSU is always tough at home. (I'm just giving us the advantage at home)

But certainly hope we win both

tie-breaker over FSU, and we would have the tie-breaker over Louisville. The only other thing I can imagine would be having a tie-breaker between all 3 based on ranking, and that seems even more arbitrary.

They do use rankings. It used to be BCS rankings but i

assume it's now CFP rankings. Your other thing doesn't make any sense though. If all 3 teams are 7-1 and 1-1 against each other nobody has any tie-breaker edge.

What i heard the other day is that the highest ranked team wins the division unless the 2nd highest ranked teams is within 5 (i think) spots of them in the poll in which case the 3rd team is eliminated and the h2h result between the top 2 teams is used.

If Louisville wins all of their games except at Clemson, they will be the highest ranked of the 3 with wins over FSU and at Houston.

FSU would probably be 2nd because their overall schedule looks better than ours right now, but it's hard to say that 2 1/2 weeks into the season. At the moment though you would think Ole Miss > Auburn and Florida is definitely better than USC. USF is also supposed to be pretty good this year and they play them on the road. They also get UNC and Miami from the coastal which is probably tougher than GT and Pitt but we will see.

However if Louisville were to lose at Houston and FSU lose to Florida things change really quickly. 11-1 Clemson would probably be ranked ahead of 10-2 Louisville and FSU.

I guess my thinking was that we would have beaten

the team that already beat FSU, so FSU couldn't pass Louisville because Louisville had beaten them, and they couldn't pass us because we beat Louisville. But yeah, the more I think about it, the more that doesn't make sense :)

I literally laughed out loud at this attempt at logic.

The tied team with the highest ranking in the full (College Football Playoff) standings following the conclusion of regular season games, unless the second of the tied teams is ranked within five-or-fewer places of the highest ranked tied team. In this case, the two-team tiebreaking procedure shall be applied between the top two ranked tied teams.
