The QB who Walt said could "make all the throws"

11

Aug 8, 2023, 10:33 AM

earned approx $23K in the XFL this past year.

Meanwhile, the qb he proclaimed "can't throw a forward pass" earned $51 million and is rated as the #3 player in the NFL.

He tells you like it is.

My best guess would be Kelly Bryant and Jalen Hurts

The name Jalen Hurts is pretty painful for me. He wanted to play QB for Texas and dreamed of going there his entire life. Charlie Strong, genius that he is, didn't want him other than as a potential DB. He also thought Hurts sucked, apparently.
Then, Bama fans were there, too, the smart ########. They wanted him long gone and replaced every year and finally got their wish and Hurts transferred to OU and probably there to get back at my school, Texas.

You'd be surprised how dumb some experts are. Charlie Strong made 5 mil a year and didn't know a QB from a DE and he proved that at UT and at UCF after he was fired over here. He was only hired because of PC baloney which is common. He was a good DC at all of yalls favorite school in a little town called Columbia, SC. He was also good at Florida at one time as a coordinator, but he was barely average at Louisville as a HC.
I still shake my head over him and Tom Herman. Herman was good to my nephew at a mid sized college when Herman was an assistant there and my nephew was a WR. He was also a good head guy at Houston, but once hired at UT (the real one, not that one in Knoxville) he became incredibly afraid of losing. It was obvious from day one he was coaching not to lose.

But, this was about Jalen Hurts and not my own pain. Hurts would have been a really good QB for us and Strong refused to bring in any transfers or any talent and we were stuck with painfully bad QBs until Sam Ehlinger came along.

Dude, if you don't like Charlie Strong because he didn't win

have your gripes, but the "pc baloney" is intellectually lazy and disingenuous. That speaks more to who you are than Strong being a bad HC. He followed the typical path of far too many assistant coaches and DCs who rose up the ranks from asst to coordinator to HC but didn't have any success as a HC. Were Will Muschamp, Lincoln Riley (to the NFL and back to CFB), Billy Napier or Jeff Scott "PC hires"? Or, just Charlie Strong, Tony Elliott, Kevin Sumlin, and James Franklin were PC hires?

Let's not act like Nick Saban took his first HC job and became the coach that he has been for the last 12 years, or that Lane Kiffin has been much of anything except a blowhard, or that Hugh Freeze has been anything other than a pedophile (enticing young boys with a bag of money), or that Napier has gotten an extra year to save his job before he's fired (and it's not likely that he does save his job).

Charlie Strong sucked as a HC, but his record as a DC prior to Texas warranted an opportunity in the big chair just like every other top notch coordinator before him... your pain is warranted, but the PC vitriol is not...

I disagree completely and am more in tune with the situation than you are. Texas went with a black coach just because A$M (speaking of bags of money) had one. That is the only reason that Charlie was hired. We were the last all white team to win a national championship and other such have used the racism card with their negative recruiting against us for decades. We’ve had to fight that racist crap since earlier than the last Darrel Royal championships when a super talented RB from San Antonio wasn’t allowed to come to Texas because our local racists wouldn’t allow it. Royal said he wanted to recruit the kid who was named Warren McVea in 1965, but they wouldn’t let him.

If you enjoy high school football, the 1965 season featured two state powerhouse teams in San Antonio that season that was one of the wildest ever. It’s even on YouTube. It was a white team vs a black team and the white team won, but just barely and it was a fun game. I was a little kid at the time.

If Walt was as good as he thinks he is he'd have his own show on ESPN or FOX Sports.

Yeah, I mean I still like Walt, I do think he's pretty knowledgeable with sports but he's definitely not right all the time.

The other thing he's said recently had to do with DJ and how he just doesn't think he was that bad. He calls everyone who thinks that an idiot and blames it all on the wide receivers. I think that's patently ridiculous. DJ was missing wide open throws every game, in the South Carolina game he couldn't even throw a screen pass accurately. I'm not saying our wide receivers don't shoulder some of the blame, they do! I'm just saying his defense of DJ at the expense of calling callers idiots was laughable.

I think he's just straight wrong on how Dabo handled the situation too and you can tell it's 100% due to kissing butt. Let me explain.

Walt says that if you think Dabo handled the DJ situation poorly it's because you're an idiot, OR if you are right it means that Dabo was purposefully sabotaging Clemson. He claims Dabo sees DJ everyday and knows better then any of us. To claim otherwise means we're stupid or we believe Dabo did it on purpose. He sees no other option. I find this laughable coming from the same guy who says "All these NFL scouts are idiots and don't know anything". He constantly goes on rants on how the NFL screws up the QB position. So, maybe Walt, Dabo was simply wrong on DJ. It doesn't mean he is a bad coach, or that he was sabotaging Clemson on purpose. Maybe, just maybe he got that one player wrong. By your own words is highly possible that people whose entire lives revolve around Football can be wrong about players at times.

The fact he doesn't acknowledge this possibility shows he's just a Dabo butt kisser imo.

All of that aside, I DO think Walt knows sports very well though. He's just not always right either.

I rewatched the NC State game and DJ was close.

He managed the game, had some decent runs and had some decent throws.

None of the WR caught contested balls.

There were a couple of drops.

There were two throws they just missed that would have been home runs. It wasn't clear if the miss was DJ overthrowing or the WRs not completing the routes.

What I'm saying is mid season, DJ was close to putting together a complete game against a top 20 defense.

Unfortunately, things regressed badly from there.

I won’t go into the whole Walt Deptula stuff, but I will address the comment about Dabo knows more than we do as fans because he is in practice every day.
That’s a true statement. We even saw it during the season. We saw a good Cade Klubnik, and bad Cade Klubnik. I fully believe in practice Cade was throwing pics and putting the ball in Jeopardy too much. I’m sure Dabo saw some potential in him, but he also was worried that Cade would lose games with turnovers.

DJ won games for us by not losing games. He wasn’t dynamic and wouldn’t go ball out and win the game with his play. But he also didn’t lose games by putting the ball in jeopardy too often either. Sure he threw his share of pics but from what practice insiders said Cade would throw a TD pass on one play and then around and throw a pic six the next.

Bash Walt all you want but I’m not bashing Dabo. The man makes millions of dollars to make those decisions and not a single one of us is even remotely qualified enough to make the kind of decisions he has to make on a daily basis.

Imagine a world where a Clemson fan says DJ didn’t put the ball in jeopardy!! Lmfao! Are you on drugs?? How many games did he throw a pick six or hand the ball off to the other team and the result was points going the other way?? Put the crack pipe in the trash please! Jesus…

I liked Walt and had listened to him forever until he got hung up on DJ last year and EVERYTHING was the wide receivers fault and DJ was not to blame. Basically calling his listening audience stupid for questioning the worst QB we've ever head.

I listen up until 3:00 and cut it off when Walt comes on.

I do listen to him but mainly because I'm a sports junkie. He is knowledgeable but where I find him pathetic is his I'm right you're wrong mentality, much like you mentioned about DJ.

1. DJ was not a fit for the Clemson offense.
2. He could not process the RPO
3. He lacked accuracy

Our WR group was lacking due to injury yes. But those same guys look a lot better in the ACC championship and the Orange Bowl, especially when you consider we have 3rd string and walk on players out there.

Dabo screwed the pooch on DJ. I think he knows that but we will never hear Dabo bad mouth any one of his players. Dude is loyal to the core regardless of what the former or current player may say about him.

All of those things can be true at the same time and are not mutually exclusive.

I watch games only and never bother with opinions of people on the tube. From what I've seen and heard, this guy isn't all that great at scouting talent and very few are.

The only time I even hear what any of these guys say is during the combine in Indianapolis. Sometimes in games I will turn the sound down so I don't have to listen to some stooges. There's a few exceptions, but not many.

My least favorite talking head of all time other than Paul Finebaum was Brent Mooseburgers. I was watching an SEC game and Mooseburgers laughed when his sidekick Jessie Palmer said that Ole Miss had to go to Memphis next week and they'd better be careful. Mooseburgers not only laughed, but he predicted a huge blowout.

Needless to say, Memphis upset Ole Miss.

They pretty much all know that their butts aren't a hole in the ground, but they'd be hard pressed to explain the difference.
