The portal giveth and the portal taketh away.

Or, live by the portal- die by the portal.

However you want to say it, coaches are in a strange new world with a combination of portal rules and lack of rules for NIL.

Two extreme ways to play it.
1. Don't use it, or use it as little as possible. Count on recruiting and developing players and count on them not entering the portal. (The Clemson method)
2. Don't worry about people leaving. Just use NIL money and buy the best players possible, HS or portal guys. If guys leave, just go buy a replacement. (The aTm method)

Can either of those extremes be successful at the elite level?

Or is there some middle ground?

Here is an example of how tiny the tightrope is coaches are walking when they try to navigate the NIL/portal waters.

I'll use the FSU situation as the example because I am familiar with it. Feel free to blast away at Norvell and FSU and laugh at how the portal will be the ruin of the Noles. (This is a Clemson board, I understand. I am not here to defend the way Norvell is using the portal. Just here to present the facts as they stand today.

For the past two years the argument could be made that no team in America has used the portal better. Jared Verse, Braden Fiske, Ventrell Cypress, Keon Coleman, Johnny Wilson, Jeremiah Bell, Trey Benson all came through the portal and all were starters this year. Probably no team can point to 7 guys who contributed as much to the success of the team as FSU can. (And, this isn't even talking about Transfers who came before the portal - Jordan Travis.)

Without the FSU would probably be 6-6 or worse and looking for a new coach.

So, the portal giveth.

Now, FSU has several guys in the portal. Most are guys buried on the depth chart and are no big loss. But, there are at least five guys who have either entered the portal or have said they intend to enter the portal. It appears that all 5 are using the portal as leverage to get more money from the FSU NIL Collective. It appears that all are saying, "How much will you pay me to stay?" (And, at least four of these guys were recruits to FSU out of HS. They aren't portal guys who are just jumping from one team to another. All five would be competing for #1 on the depth chart and at the very least getting significant playing time next year.

The FSU NIL Collective has made retention a priority over paying HS recruits. There are at least 7 guys who were considered NFL draft picks last year (including Jared Verse and Jordan Travis) who decided to come back to FSU instead of going to the NFL. Specifics of NIL deals are not made public, but it is common knowledge that all 7 got enough money from the collective that they decided it was worth the money to stay.

Now, it appears the collective is going to have to do the same thing this year. But, not just with guys who might be NFL draft picks, but also guys who could enter the portal.

When a coaching staff does a great job developing players, those players are marketable and other schools are willing to pay them.

So, the portal taketh away.

The dilemma, maybe even trilemma, all coaches are facing today is, how to manage the roster - HS recruits, NIL, Collective, retention, whose leaving through the portal, who can we get from the portal, how much does our NIL have to spend, how should we prioritize that budget, etc.

I have no idea what the proper course of action should be. I recognize every situation is different. I'm just saying that today's world is something coaches had no idea they would be in just 5 years ago, or maybe even 18 months ago.

That certainly seems to be the case.***

video from FOX, NBC, or any other network. That they watch EVERY single minute of every game these teams play in.

All the information, data they are getting is from ESPN and we know ESPN has an agenda.

It's not every program, it'll hurt the ones that relied on it to try to pull them out the gutter like FSU and S.C the most, they'll be losing the most because they take as many transfers as they do recruits. Others like Bama, GA, OSU, Mich, Clemson and a few others still recruit well enough to where it won't be as significant and you still see the same faces multiple years rather than having an entire different team each year. Any coach would struggle with that.

Good post. Interesting reflection of the effects of NIL.
I hate the way it has changed college football but at the same time if you are not getting paid what you are worth in the business world, it’s not uncommon to seek other employment using a better offer as leverage to increase your current pay. If you’re good enough, it usually pays.

I can agree with you that there is middle ground to be had when it comes to using the portal and I think FSU might be one of the best, if not the best examples of getting the right puzzle pieces for their team which contributed greatly this season.

However there are a ton of teams out there who took the same route as FSU that ended up missing big time on the players they brought in and it didn't help their programs at all.

Again, I think it comes down to trying the middle ground approach and using the portal more as a tool to fill gaps than to fill 2/3 of your roster every season

I think Norvell is tryign very hard to reach the point where he doesn't need to get 5 starters out of the portal every year. When he got to FSU there were no 4 or 5 stars who would even consider FSU. His plan was to build through the portal short term and though HJS recruiting improving every year.

That appears to be working. FSU is set for a top 5 or better class this year. One more year like that and you can really start to see a difference.

But I'm not sure he was counting on 5 or more 2024 starters leaving or threatening to leave this year

Clemson has lost 3 - Mukuba, Pride and Collins - I think. 3 years ago those guys wouldn't have left, probably. Dabo has to figure out how to handle that. I have no idea what he is planning to do, much less have any idea what he should do. Just saying it's a different world.

FSU was successful once getting players from the portal.

but I feel like it's going to be a live by the portal, die by the portal situation.

You only have to miss on a QB once to go back to being a 6-6 team and no high school QB is going to come in and stick around waiting for playing time when they know the coach will go to the portal at every opportunity.

I have no problem with a player on the team asking for more NIL money when they see what transfers are being offered.

It's no different than the UMiami guard who saw the guy coming in getting $800k and deciding he wanted to get paid, too.

Seems like it will only be a short matter of time before the top players on everyone's roster will portal shop annually to see who will pay them the most in the market. The courts will allow players to transfer at will as often as they like. This is on top of top HS recruits requiring to be paid for their services. If a team says "not playing that game, we'll evaluate and develop," they are just waiting to have their legs cut out from under them when an offer is presented that cannot be refused by their top developmental players that have matured. Money doesn't talk, it screams! Just talk to Mr. Ohtani.

I do believe you could find yourself in a cycle of reliability on the portal and never build any real depth.
