The ACC is dead to me....

17

Nov 1, 2023, 8:09 PM

As a Tech fan, I have never fully enjoyed our ACC membership in football. But I was appreciative of it, given how we were in the wilderness during the late 60s and 70's. The ACC offered a lifeline in a conference with other southern schools, many with very good academics, and I wanted to make it work. I thought being in a conference with FSU, Clemson, UNC, UVA, VT, NC STate, Miami, etc, would work out in the long-run.

But after they added SMU, Cal, and Stanford, I started to shake my head. Then, they came out with a schedule that gives Tech zero permanent rivals. It could be that we asked for that, and if so, fine. But a college football conference with no permanent rivals isn't a conference to me.

I want out. I have no interest in bouncing around like a pinball, playing whomever each year.

And I know that Tech is in no place to demand anything. We've been at rock-bottom since 2019. We aren't competitive generally, and our idea of a "great" season now is winning 7 games.

But if there's ever a chance for us to leave the ACC without destroying our finances, I hope we do it. I don't care if it's the Big 10 or the SEC. I'll take whatever we can get. And yes, I know that there's less than a 1% chance of either offering us membership. Clemson & FSU will get into those leagues when the GOR becomes less onerous. Tech will probably be left stranded in the ACC.

smitty, most Clemson folks have not liked this pitiful conference since '84. Sad, basketball centric conference that has failed in that venue now. LMAO. Now, the acc is doing their best 'olympic' sport conference diatribe; while really cool, they don't pay the bills.

Hey there! When we win the ACC curling championship, you'll be singing a different tune.

Certainly the weirdest looking sport. Imagine, you win if you sweep the fastest. Was it invented by a housecleaning person?

If Clemson leaves the ACC for the SEC along with FSU - out of all the teams we are leaving, it is the rivalry with Georgia Tech that I think I'll miss the most. NC State is probably second and would be competitive if not for the stunt they pulled on the vote and their current coach, but GA Tech is first for me.

I'll miss the Clemson rivalry. I know it's been lopsided since about 2015. But those games are worth preserving. That's what makes college football better than other sports. Even when you stink, it always feels good to beat a team that you play every year.

If you guys leave the conference before us - and I'm sure you will - it's been nice knowing you. We're only 2 hours apart. We should keep playing, for Godsakes.

Will be sad when/if it Clemson-Tech goes away

On the gridiron, the history & tradition between the 2 is special IMO. As someone who came up in the 90s & early 2000s, the games were almost always competitive & hinged on a play or 2, think that still stands out to fans of both schools who experienced that time frame.

Add in basketball, baseball (2 of the best programs historically in ACC), & golf (again, 2 of best in ACC history).

Calling Bobby Dodd a House of Horrors didn’t even begin to describe it.

I don’t take our success in the series the last few years for granted and will really miss this rivalry. It’s about as historic as a football rivalry can get.

It sucks because I enjoy the annual game with the Jackets.

I was disappointed to see that was no longer an every year battle. Same with NC State. Historical rivalries are being tossed aside, with some exceptions, so we can play California schools that have no rivalries with anyone in the ACC except for our part time member, Notre Dame. I hope we get to battle the Jackets a few more times over the next several years.

Go Tigers!!!

I posted yesterday disappointed the Clemson - Ga Tech game is not considered a rivalry game by the ACC.
Great tradition and always enjoyed going to Atlanta since I was a student 1977 when there was a little on the field confrontations between both student fan bases.

I would love to hear from Clemson's AD (who is a GT grad) on the new ACC schedule and why the Clemson-GT was not fought for. There has been no interview or anything written on it. Odd that no one from the university has given Clemson's perspective or explain why?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The ACC is dead to me....

Nov 3, 2023, 10:12 AM

Yeah, I don't understand why neither school fought for this rivalry. It is what it is at this point. College football is going to get to the point where it won't be all that enjoyable anymore. These mega-conferences that stretch from one ocean to the other, while teams that are 100 miles apart hardly ever play anymore. They're going to lose alot of the regional fans like we have in the Southeast.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Holy smokes. I'm just seeing that schedule. UNC, Duke, and NC State took

1

Nov 1, 2023, 11:59 PM

all permanent rivals away from you so they could each get 3 to keep all the NC games, plus UVA's historic long run with UNC. Total shaft. The ACC has brutally squandered so many opportunities not to be in this position it's obscene.

I agree totally with your sentiment. And not because of money or media rights - it's lost its identity and passion completely with this desperate ploy.

The ONLY reason ..

that I would want to stay in the acc is to yearly play GATech. College football is starting to s*ck for the bucks. Is CU vs SC next on the hit list?

Clemson should have left the ACC in the 80s when they took it upon themselves to add an extra year to the punishment already decided by the NCAA. I understand how you feel at GA Tech.
