The most exciting 25 seconds in football?

28

Oct 5, 2023, 10:27 PM

I have a slight bone to pick with that.

No, I'm not going to compare it to planting the spear at FSU or dotting the I at Ohio State or Enter Sandman at VT.

I just think it's longer than 25 seconds. It's more than just running down the hill.

The excitement starts before the cannon goes off. It builds and builds and the run down the hill is the the crescendo.

But, the orchestra starts with the players leaving the locker room and tossing the All In chip in the bucket. It builds as they get on the bus. It continues to build as the busses drive around the stadium. It continues as the camera shows Dabo standing in the front of the bus. It builds as they exit the bus. Then it really builds as they show up at the top of the field. Continues to build as Dabo rubs the rock, then takes off his cap and starts waving to the crowd.

The excitement is there, then the cannon fires. And, the final 25 seconds of the excitement occurs.

It is a beautifully written orchestration.

If you put a stopwatch to it, it is closer to two minutes with all the players we dress out for home games now.

My son timed it two years ago. From the cannon until the last player is on the sideline is a little over 90 seconds.

No he didn’t, he was nowhere near the spear. He just smirked in front of his own sideline when the spear went into the ground.

rides to the middle of the field. Looks over at Danny and throws the stick in the ground. Danny,... excuse me, Coach Ford gives that smile that says, eff u, and spits the biggest wad of tobacco at the nag, Tonto and stick!
This is common knowledge and has become lore because Ford was not someone to mess with.

I've never seen coach turn foul towards the rock.

All I'm saying. So go troll troll troll ur boat back to $hit iceville where the natural light flows and turning your back on a crowd to pisss is considered proper!

When the phrase was coined it was mainly just running down the hill. The added buildup has been in recent decades. Also, a couple years ago Herbstreit I believe called it the grandest entrance in all of sports. This immediately obsoleted the 25 seconds quote imo.

Just 1 beef with your statement. How in the heck did “dotting the i “ get into this thread? That is the lamest pregame tradition there is. It shows that when you are the largest and have the media supporting you, they will promote anything to give you pub. The band has 4 letters to spell out and one of them is an “i”. Come on.

I wish the 20 seconds of standing at the top of the hill, rocking back and forth with arms locked waiting on the cannon to fire would change. I remember when there was a lot more excitement up there.

When Musburger said this in 1985 it was probably accurate. The hype around the busses loading up and driving around the stadium really started with the opener against GA in 2013. That really extended the time and also the hype. It is my favorite time to be in Death Valley. I just would like to see a smoother segue from the music on the loudspeakers to the band playing Tiger Rag. I think the crowd feels drowned out by the loud music and has to ramp it up all over again when the band starts playing. This is a more recent issue and I’m sure it will get worked out. Doesn’t matter to me - I’m the guy in the aisle in section C being loud the whole time.

The team used to RUN down the hill like Dabo. I guess he feels he could still coach with a broken leg but they don't want to chance a player getting hurt.

It sure beats a chicken in a dress, no matter how woke, coming out of a cloth outhouse or now on a slow train!

They have been doing this for a very long time. How many legs have been broken running down the hill?? If that is a concern, then yes, we have gotten soft.

football, then later on I remember it being called the most exciting 45 seconds in football, and now currently they seemed to have settled on the most exciting 25 seconds mantra.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It changed a bit for me when they started running down more in

Oct 6, 2023, 9:16 AM

A single file. That’s taking too long imo. Most of the time the band is moving out of formation before the last player gets done.

I know they did that to help with player safety.

When they all ran down ‘in mass’ and piled up near the home sideline, it was much quicker and way more exciting to me anyway.

'Dabo's Downhill Sprint -- An Homage' by CATI

Oct 6, 2023, 9:46 AM

The most exciting 25 seconds in college football for me is watching a middle-aged man sprint down a steep slope and launch hisself all the way to the 50 without sending both kneecaps skittering across the turf.

It's amazing.

I always wince, knowing that were I to attempt same, the first things to go would be my hamstrings.

Which would of course send me face-first, arms sprawling because, while I remain on good terms with wheated bourbon, I am no longer on good terms with inertia.

And 90,000 strangers would enjoy watching the world's only fully-functioning Clemson Longhorn (I always wear my custom UT jersey to Clemson home games -- it's #16 but says "Whitehurst" because without irony where are we as a nation?) bumble like an insulin-resistant bowling ball out to maybe the 11 or 12 yard line because I don't have the length I once had.

And my bladder would likely give way.
And the plastic booze bag I sneak in most games would likely rupture.

And it would be on the big screen. And there would be laughter. And I'd finally get myself together,
stand tall, face the cameras and give all y'all a huge

HOOK EM TIGERS because I revel in the juxtaposition of obvious incongruities.

I was in Tiger Band from 78 to 82 and that is an incredible time on the field. Sometimes the noise was so loud you could not hear the player next to you. Thats why there are about three field conductors. You have to watch one of them to keep time. The noise vibrates your soul and it is an incredible indescibable feeling. There are 2 songs that make up the entrance. A lot of people think its the long version and short version of Tiger Rag but the first song is "Sock it to em" and at the end of that song is when the cannon goes off and Tiger rag starts. We never worried about missing a note because nobody could hear it anyway. When I am at the game watching that process even today, I still get a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes from the wonderful memories.

Like going to a great concert or movie.

But you do realize that those "25 seconds" are just a catch phrase from Mr. Musburger, who was only off by over a half a minute? It takes more than a minute for the entire team to get down the hill after the cannon goes off.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brent Musburger was on TV when he coined the phrase

Oct 6, 2023, 6:16 PM

He knew that ABC was only going to stay live with the run for a certain amount of time, so he cut it short so as not to make ABC look like they cheated viewers out of the spectacle.

Back then we were even less well known than BYU. "Hype" was not yet a word, and the idea that Danny Ford could lead anything "exciting" wasn't yet "a thing", not that it ever would be either.
