I am really happy about the great job that he did this year.

One thing that Goodwin took a lot of flack for last season was lack of blitzing; and I am including myself in that category because we had great players but rarely blitzed and put pressure on the qb.

This season it's completely different. Wes has not only been willing to blitz, but he's done it often. I had noticed the difference but didn't realize just how drastic it was before seeing a stat that was shown in the coot game. The announcers said that Clemson blitzed on 48% of our defensive plays this season and they said that it was second in college football! Only 1 other team sent more pressure than us. No, we didn't always sack the qb but more times than not we affected the play and at the very least forced a bad throw by the qb.

Wes has drastically improved and I'm excited to see how he continues to progress in his role as DC.

That defense was the Clemson identity. We looked for the identity all year waiting for offense to flourish under Riley but it was right in front of us the entire season. The identity was DEFENSE!!

Coach earned himself a nice pay raise, well earned. Coach Brent Venables, who knows a thing about defense we all agree, said Wes Goodwin was the real deal and wanted him at Oklahoma.

Congrats on a great season Coach!

Agreed and I think there maybe a player factor in this additional blitzing.

I think the LB has a Blitz option on a lot of plays. It looked like Trotter had this in the last couple of games at least (when I noticed) I say that because we would be in same formation on defense but he would not blitz or blitz immediately or delay his blitz. I think he was allowed to audible himself into the blitz depending on read.

It was very effective against UNC and SC, would have to go back and watch some of the earlier games and see if it shows there too.

He really seemed to affect the game a lot these last two weeks.

And the reason we didn't blitz as much last year was simple, our secondary was a weakness. When you have a secondary that can't consistently cover in man to man/one on one situations it really limits what you can do effectively blitz wise. This year the secondary was much improved, and you saw more blitzing as a result.

I am just glad that he went from being derided to having accolades. One bright spot for our coaching this year.

The reason he has been more aggressive is because he knew what kind of secondary he had.

But wait, wasn't he one of the lousy coaches that Dabo only hired cause he was a buddy and should have been fired last year? Maybe Dabo knew what he was doing.
