Got an email today that was about a national program for X wine. VP be like “we are close enough to make it if we really push this week”
The program is for March and April for 14k cases. We are at 7k cases after 7 weeks w one left. In what FN world can we make that?
The trick is they know we can’t make it but just want reps to push out as much as possible to make it look like we gave it the college try.

Thats essentially what happens when these suppliers have year end.

We have to hit X amount of cases for goal bc we corporately agreed to it, and if we don’t then we take a 6 figure hit as a penalty w the contract (which most times is about 400k)
Thus distributor discounts the wine to a crazy price to move said cases bc the cost of the discount to make up the cases would be less than the penalty. And all the independent wine shops are happy and buy them, then don’t even change the retail and make 300% profit.

They agree to unrealistic goals bc they want the 10 year contract while they sit around a conference table drinking expresso from a personal Cuban lady that comes around w expresso cart. I’ve sat at the table and this is exactly how it goes. We know the goals are too high but we want the contract. Then supplier makes the penalty super high if missed bc they know it’s too high of a goal which is why they suggested said goal.
