I'm clueless.

HS recruiting, Portal, NIL.

I have no idea how to decide which recruiting is best, or what combination should be used. I have no idea how to allocate NIL money between HS recruits, portal guys, or retaining guys currently on the team.

I am reasonably certain that each school is different. I don't think there is a magic formula that fits for every school. And, I think that the situation will change, possibly drastically, from year to year.

Examples (And, I won't even use outlandish situations like Colorado and aTm.)

FSU
15 commits, 89.78 average, 7 at 90+
7 portals, 6 offense, 1 defense

Clemson
HS - 25 commits, 91.96 average, 13 at 90+

Good news with FSU: 4 of the transfers will go into Spring #1 on the depth chart: TE, T, G, G
Bad news: Need at least 1 DL and 1 DB who would start Spring at #1.
More bad news: FSU will probably lose 1 or 2 of the guys who will flip on signing day.
Best news: NIL deals seem to be the reason 4 or 5 guys have decided to come back next year. (Still hoping three more - Johnny Wilson, Jared Verse, and Fabion Lovett will return but no word yet.)

So, which is the better way? I suspect what FSU did is best for FSU. Everyone says we have to recruit HS better. Maybe next year it will improve. But, if we recruited 25 HS guys this year, we would be huring next year.

I suspect Clemson is doing what is best for Clemson. I also suspect that within a few days, or weeks, Clemson will pick up one or two guys from the portal who are plug-and-play guys.

What is the best formula for FSU and Clemson this year?

Don't ask me. I'm clueless.

If you have that much money, you can find many more important places to spend it than paying football players. Schools do not use their money on NIL.

So maybe all those multi-million dollar coaches really are earning their money?

Re: I'm clueless.

No because according to the thought process behind the NIL and transfer portal, all the game planning, organizing, recruiting, and endless hours of work year-around is done by the players who are taken advantage of.

That’s sarcasm in case anyone didn’t catch it.

My theory is take five star and some elite 4 star from HS. Get everyone else out of the portal. Should not sign any OL and DL out of HS. The portal can effectively increase a teams scholarship numbers by 1/3 if used correctly.

Were you including four and five star DL? I’d have to disagree if so. I’m going after the Dexter Lawrence’s, CWs, BBs, etc. I can kind of see OL as they are tougher to evaluate going from HS to college.

There are like 10,000 Clemson users on here....

Thanks for the kind words. Here is my story.

I like talking football. I'm not into smack talking. I like having reasonable and rational discussions.

I've learned over the past 25+ years that message boards tend to attract good fans who like to talk serious football. But they also attract way too many people who are more interested in being "nattering nabobs of negativism" and seem to take joy in complaining or in pointing fingers at others.

I was on an FSU board years ago, virtually at the beginning of message boards. For a few years it was great. Then it slowly got infiltrated by complainers. The board turned into an argument board. We argued about everything - and not just football. We argued about politics. We argued about Bobby Bowden being too old. We argued about who the next coach should be. We argued about whether Mark Richt should be fired. But, mostly we argued about politics. It destroyed the board. Everybody who wanted to talk football just left. The only people remaining were folks who wanted to blast all things related to FSU sports, while still claiming to be FSU fans, and to blast anyone who dared disagree with their political views.

I learned from that experience.

1. Don't ever talk politics on a sports message board.
2. Don't take criticism personally. The boards are full of people who are overly blessed with keyboard courage. It is amazing how courageous people can be when they hide behind a keyboard.
3. It's hard to type voice inflection. It's amazing how many arguments are started because the reader misunderstood what the writer was trying to say.
4. Just try and ignore the posters who make it their personal mission to point out what is wrong with everything and how they could do it much better.

100% in agreement. TigerNet has far to many coaches .... many who have likely never been to a game or even been on campus ..... but they have all the answers.

Like CSO said ….one of the very best on here. Can we use NNNs for short when referring to “nattering nabobs of negativism”? I think you just coined another new TNET word.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can't take credit for that.

It was used in a speech by Spiro Agnew. The speech was written by Pat Buchanan, his speechwriter at the time.

I would tell you more, but I don't talk politics on a sports board. ?

Excellent in fact.

I learned from FSU's Jimbo experience. I learned don't hire Jimbo. A&M is not slowly learning this.

It still bothers me he was ever allowed to attend Clemson even though he only lasted a few days.

You are not wrong about one thing, you are clueless.

To be rich, do what rich people do. Georgia and Alabama are the top programs and what are they doing?

Burger King Bobby AKA Bobby Bowden, one of the biggest hypocrites of all time, used to recruit lights out. That’s what needs to happen for FSU to be great again and cheating may be required
