Saturday Baseball Practice

Jan 26, 2013, 10:41 PM

Took in the baseball practice this afternoon and it was quite enjoyable. Then again, I just like baseball so that kinda goes without saying. Good turnout of fans in Doug Kingsmore which was encouraging. They played 8 innings, with each most pitchers pitching two. Some of the ones near the end only pitched one. Matthew Crownover started for the "home" team and pitched pretty well considering he hadn't been on the mound in 10 months after having "Tommy John surgery". He gave up a couple of bloop doubles and 2 runs in the first, but no runs in the second. From where I was sitting, he seemed to have good velocity and control. I can see Clemson using him the same way the Braves used Kris Medlen last year, as a reliever early and a starter late, especially in the post-season. DJ Reader got to hit a couple of times and he's a work in progress. I haven't seen him pitch, but that may well be his strong suit. Jackson Campana also pitched and fared pretty well; it'll be interesting to see where he plays. He's got pretty good power, but needs to learn to hit breaking pitches better. I guess that can be said about many college freshmen. I think Kevin Bradley will be the backup catcher; he played very well today. He's also a switch-hitter and the infield is kinda full. Jay Baum made a nice catch at shortstop and, as he usually does, Thomas Brittle made a great catch in center on a ball I didn't think he had any chance of catching. Jay Baum may well be the starting shortstop, with Steve Wilkerson playing second. I fully expect to see Maleeke Gibson in the outfield. He's fast and he always seems to be on base. Matt Campbell got to pitch an inning and that was good to see after he got hurt late last season. Kyle Schnell has a rather unusual sidearm delivery which even gave the left-handed hitters fits. I imagine he'd be even tougher on righties. I think the weekend rotation to start the season will be Daniel Gossett, Kevin Pohle and Patrick Andrews. I made some pictures, but they aren't particularly enlightening.
